3 Famous Movie Quotes Every Gen Xer Can Recite

By Matthias Binder

Ask anyone who grew up in the 1970s and early 1980s to finish a movie line, and you’ll likely get an answer before you’ve finished the question. Those years were the era of VHS tapes, cable reruns, and the family-room TV that played the same films on a loop.

Certain lines stuck because they were repeated at school lunch tables, in car rides, and at sleepovers. Three of them still show up on official lists and in everyday conversation, and they’re a good place to start.

George Lucas’s Star Wars arrived in 1977, and the blessing “May the Force be with you” became part of the movie’s identity almost immediately. Characters say it in the original film, and it has been echoed through the sequels, prequels, and TV series that followed. Kids who saw the movie in theaters were often the same ones who bought the action figures the following year.

The line has also outgrown the film itself. Fans turned the phrase into a playful goodbye, and May 4th has become an unofficial Star Wars holiday because of the pun on it. For a generation that watched the trilogy on repeat, it’s the kind of line you can say without thinking.

Steven Spielberg’s E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial came out in 1982, and the little alien’s halting request to phone home became one of the decade’s most imitated lines. The raspy voice made it easy to mimic, which is probably why every kid on the playground had a version. The film was a huge box office success and became the top-grossing movie of its time.

The line lasted because it carried real feeling in three simple words. It’s a story about being far from home, told through a child’s eyes. Gen Xers who saw it young often remember both the laugh they got from the impression and the lump in the throat during the film.

“Here’s Johnny!” from The Shining

Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining reached theaters in 1980, and Jack Nicholson’s shout of “Here’s Johnny!” came in the famous bathroom door scene. The phrase itself borrowed from the way Ed McMahon introduced Johnny Carson on The Tonight Show, which many American viewers of the era would have recognized. That mix of late night TV and horror is part of why it stuck.

Many Gen Xers first saw the film on home video, often before they were supposed to. The scene is now a staple of horror lists and parody, and the American Film Institute included the line on its list of memorable movie quotes. Say it in a group of people of a certain age, and someone will almost certainly do the axe swing.
