Television loves a long goodbye, the kind with a farewell tour, a clip reel, and a tearful finale scene. Reality rarely cooperates. Sometimes a star exits mid-run, leaving producers scrambling and fans staring at a half-finished story.
The four departures below happened while their shows were still pulling strong ratings or building fresh buzz, which made the timing sting a little more than usual.
Kevin Costner leaves Yellowstone before the finale
More than a year after Kevin Costner was rumored to have unexpectedly walked away from the hit Paramount drama after four and a half seasons, he confirmed in June 2024 that he would not return to finish out the series’ fifth and final season. The show had built its entire mythology around his character, John Dutton, so the exit forced the writers to rework the closing chapters on the fly.
Costner’s departure became one of the most discussed cast changes in recent cable history, largely because Yellowstone was still drawing enormous audiences when he left. The split reportedly involved scheduling conflicts with his own film projects, and it turned what should have been a straightforward final season into a story about behind the scenes tension almost as much as ranch politics.
Ellen Pompeo steps back from Grey’s Anatomy
After 19 years as Meredith Grey, Ellen Pompeo scrubbed in for the last time as a series regular on the ABC drama in February 2023. Grey’s Anatomy was still a top rated network drama at the time, which made the reduction in her role feel abrupt to longtime viewers who had followed her character since medical school.
She did not vanish completely from Grey Sloan Memorial. She’s not gone for good, and Pompeo still pops in and out of Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. That halfway exit, present in voiceover and the occasional guest spot but absent as a full time cast member, has kept the show running without its original anchor for several seasons now.
Camille Razat exits Emily in Paris
Razat, who played Emily’s friend and Gabriel’s ex-girlfriend Cami on the Netflix comedy, will not return to the show after four seasons as a series regular. The French actress confirmed she would not return for the hit Netflix series’ fifth season in April 2025.
Emily in Paris had turned into one of Netflix’s most reliable global hits by that point, with each season adding new cast members and story branches around the central love triangle. Razat’s exit removed one of the show’s original supporting players right as the series was expanding its cast list, leaving fans wondering how a storyline built around her character would be resolved offscreen.
Reneé Rapp says goodbye to The Sex Lives of College Girls
Ahead of The Sex Lives of College Girls’ third season, Reneé Rapp announced she would be leaving the Max series. Rapp had become one of the breakout names from the show, and her departure came while it was still considered a fresh, buzzy addition to Max’s comedy lineup rather than a series on its last legs.
Her exit turned out to be an early sign of trouble for the show as a whole. Much like previous years, there were also a slew of TV shows that were shockingly canceled, such as Max’s The Sex Lives of College Girls and several beloved CBS procedurals. The cancellation arrived not long after Rapp’s departure, closing the book on a series that had only recently looked like a growing franchise.
Each of these exits reshaped a show’s remaining seasons in ways the original writers rooms had not planned for. Some, like Pompeo’s, left a door open. Others, like Costner’s and Razat’s, closed it for good.
