Fame has a peculiar way of consuming children whole. One decade they are plastered across cereal boxes and movie posters, the next they have simply vanished – no farewell tour, no retirement speech, just silence. The ups and downs of child stardom have been well documented over the decades, and far too frequently the journey of a child star is viewed as a cautionary tale, as the inevitable passage of time transforms famous kids into awkward adolescents who watch their fame evaporate. Some of these stories end in genuine tragedy. Others end in something far more human: a quiet, ordinary life, deliberately chosen. Here are five child stars who disappeared from Hollywood – and what actually happened to them.
1. Macaulay Culkin – From “Home Alone” Icon to Quiet Comeback

Macaulay Culkin earned recognition for playing Kevin McCallister in the Christmas comedy Home Alone (1990), and reprised the role in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992). He furthered his success with the coming-of-age film My Girl (1991), the psychological thriller The Good Son (1993), and the comedy films Getting Even with Dad and Richie Rich (both 1994). The Home Alone franchise turned Culkin into one of the most popular Hollywood child stars of the 1990s when the first movie became a box office blockbuster with $476 million worldwide, making it the second-highest-grossing film of 1990. Then, at just fourteen, his career stalled – caught up in his parents’ bitter legal disputes and his own desire to step away from the spotlight entirely.
He took a hiatus starting in 1995, and returned to acting with the biographical drama film Party Monster (2003). In 2023, he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He starred in the comedy film Changeland (2019) and the tenth season of the anthology series American Horror Story (2021), followed by voice roles in Kid Cudi’s television special Entergalactic (2022) and in Zootopia 2 (2025). Since 2025, he has had a recurring role in the television series Fallout. The Home Alone alum has also shared how his fractured relationship with his dad Christopher “Kit” Culkin influenced his parenting with Brenda Song and their two sons Dakota and Carson.
2. Jake Lloyd – Young Anakin Skywalker and a Long Road Back

Jake was only 8 years old when George Lucas cast him as a young Anakin in The Phantom Menace, but he did not stick with acting in the years that followed. His fame followed him everywhere, and Lloyd dropped out of college in 2008, citing bullying and press harassment. Lloyd was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia in 2008 and suffered what his mother called a “full-blown psychotic break” in March 2023. His mother Lisa firmly clarified for years that it was never the film’s negative reception that derailed her son – it would have happened anyway, she said, pointing to Jake being diagnosed with schizophrenia in 2008, adding “I believe that it was genetic. And his psychiatrist also agrees that Jake was going to become schizophrenic.” She added, “I protected him from the backlash.”
In March 2024, his mom, Lisa Lloyd, spoke to Scripps News about her son’s schizophrenia after he disappeared from the public eye. At the time, she shared that he was 10 months into an 18-month stay at a mental health rehabilitation facility. Jake Lloyd finished his 18-month stay at the mental health facility at the end of last year and began living at a new rehabilitation center at the beginning of 2025 to continue his treatment with the freedom to come and go. Almost two years after the actor entered a mental health rehabilitation facility, Jake reunited with fellow Star Wars child actor Daniel Logan, who played young Boba Fett in Attack of the Clones. Daniel shared a snap of their reunion on Instagram writing, “Just spent the day with my brother.”
3. Amanda Bynes – Nickelodeon’s Queen Who Walked Away

In 1996, when she was just 10 years old, Amanda Bynes made a name for herself when she was added to the cast of Nickelodeon’s hit sketch comedy series All That. Three years later, Bynes was the recipient of a sketch show of her very own, The Amanda Show, which also served as a launching pad for other successful Nickelodeon personalities. She went on to star in movies like What A Girl Wants, She’s The Man, and Hairspray, but she retired from acting in 2010 after appearing in Easy A. In her twenties, she faced a series of public mental health crises that led to a conservatorship, drawing comparisons to Britney Spears’ situation.
She graduated from The Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising in 2019, and in 2022, her nine-year conservatorship ended. Since then, Amanda has made use of her degree by pursuing fashion and art. She produced a pop-up art show in December 2024, including art and clothing that Amanda designed. She collaborated with Austin Babbitt, aka Asspizza, on the project. In August 2024, she posted a photo of herself in an apartment with no caption or any other context. On March 13, 2025, she posted a selfie video of herself silently staring at the camera and saved it to a highlight reel called “HOTEL.”
4. Jonathan Taylor Thomas – The Teen Idol Who Chose Books Over Sets

As one of the biggest teen heartthrobs of the 1990s, Jonathan Taylor Thomas had his pick of roles. He stepped away at the height of his fame to attend college. Though he made brief appearances on television in the 2010s, he has largely avoided the limelight and maintains a low-profile lifestyle. Home Improvement made a teen superstar out of Jonathan Taylor Thomas, who later disappeared from Hollywood entirely. Beginning February 1, 2025 in the United States, Home Improvement became available on Netflix in its entirety. The show was a ratings monster in its day and remained wildly popular for years thanks to reruns in syndication.
Tim Allen later talked about rebooting Home Improvement, but co-star Patricia Richardson said in March 2024 that neither she nor Thomas had gotten the memo. “I called Jonathan one day and said, ‘Has he asked you about this?'” she shared on the Back to the Best podcast. “He went, ‘No.'” Richardson noted that, among other issues with getting the Taylor family back together, “Jonathan’s not really interested in acting. He wants to direct and write.” Thomas appears to value his privacy and has demonstrated a consistent dedication to maintaining a life beyond the public eye. A major comeback seems unlikely, but a carefully chosen role or a surprise appearance would not be entirely unexpected.
5. Angus T. Jones – The “Half Man” Who Said No to Hollywood

Jones gained mainstream recognition in the 2000s for playing Jake Harper on the CBS sitcom Two and a Half Men (2003–2013), for which he won two Young Artist Awards and a TV Land Award. Jones got paid $250,000 per episode of Two and a Half Men. In November 2012, Jones said he had been baptized and no longer wanted to appear on the show, calling it “filth,” and he did not appear at all in Season 11. The footage was from a 15-minute religious testimonial for Forerunner Chronicles, an Alabama-based Seventh-day Adventist ministry. Jones later apologized for “showing indifference to and disrespect of my colleagues.” The actor soon left the series, but returned for the finale in 2015.
Since stepping away from the spotlight, Angus has enjoyed what he previously called a “normal existence,” which included attending the University of Colorado at Boulder. The 30-year-old was photographed in Los Angeles in April 2024 in a rare public sighting. While Angus T. Jones may have stepped away from acting, he came out of retirement to make an appearance with Charlie Sheen on the Chuck Lorre show Bookie in 2023, with the two playing poker together in a scene that mirrored the original pilot of Two and a Half Men. After his exit from Two and a Half Men, Jones embarked on a journey of personal and professional redefinition. He pursued education and explored different avenues, including a venture into the business world. While the exact details of his current activities remain relatively private, his actions suggest a commitment to building a life that aligns with his evolving values and beliefs.
What Child Stardom Really Does – The Bigger Picture

The reputation of being a child actor in Hollywood comes with baggage that often plays up the thornier aspects of childhood fame, which spirals down a darker, problematic path as they age. Tragedy did touch the lives of many child actors who disappeared from the scene, but contrary to popular legend, the post-acting life has not been as unpleasant as it is usually believed for all of them. Hollywood is certainly a fickle industry, quick to brush aside actors that no longer suit its needs – and this seems especially true for kid actors. Children and teenagers often find that their careers are over before they’ve barely even begun, with some child stars winding up with normal jobs as grown-ups when acting was no longer in the cards for them.
Far more frequently, the journey of a child star is often viewed as a cautionary tale, as the inevitable passage of time transforms cutie-pie kids into awkward adolescents who watch their fame evaporate. Unprepared for so-called “normal” life, these former child stars can find themselves lost and rudderless. Yet there are also those who walked away from Hollywood, only to return as adults to successfully restart their careers and achieve even greater fame than they’d experienced as kids. The sad truth is that many child stars suffer from mental and psychological issues later in life. The fortunate ones just let their fame wash over them, leaving it behind and following their passions.
