Hollywood doesn’t always make room for a quiet exit. When an actress steps back to focus on her children, the industry tends to move on quickly, and the question of whether she’ll return hangs around for years. Some never come back, and that’s a perfectly good outcome.
A handful of well known performers did return, though, and on their own terms. Their breaks varied in length and in how complete they were, so each entry below keeps to what has been publicly reported.
Cameron Diaz
Diaz’s last major film role for years was the 2014 remake of Annie. After that she stepped away from acting, a decision she discussed in interviews over the following years. She married musician Benji Madden in 2015, and the couple later became parents to a daughter, Raddix, born in late 2019.
Her comeback arrived with the Netflix action comedy Back in Action, which co-starred Jamie Foxx and streamed in January 2025. That gave her roughly a decade between leading screen projects. In early 2024 she also publicly welcomed a son, which made the return all the more notable.
Michelle Pfeiffer
Pfeiffer was one of the biggest stars of the late 1980s and 1990s, with three Oscar nominations by that point. She adopted a daughter, Claudia Rose, in the early 1990s and later had a son, John Henry, with her husband David E. Kelley. During the late 1990s and early 2000s she took on far fewer projects while her children were young.
She came back more visibly in 2007 with Stardust and Hairspray, then kept building a late career run. Later credits included Maleficent: Mistress of Evil and the television series The First Lady. It stands as one of the clearer examples of an actress rebuilding momentum after choosing family first.
Meg Ryan
Ryan was the face of romantic comedy through the 1990s, with films like Sleepless in Seattle and You’ve Got Mail. She has a son, Jack, born in 1992, and she adopted a daughter, Daisy, in 2006. Her acting output thinned out noticeably through the 2010s, and she spent that stretch largely out of the spotlight.
She returned to the screen in 2023 with What Happens Later, a romantic comedy she also directed and co-wrote, with David Duchovny as her co-star. It wasn’t her first time behind the camera, since she had directed Ithaca in 2015. Still, it marked her first leading role in years.

Gwyneth Paltrow
Paltrow won an Oscar for Shakespeare in Love, then gradually shifted her attention to her children and her lifestyle business, Goop. She has two children, Apple, born in 2004, and Moses, born in 2006. Her acting became occasional, with small returns such as her Marvel appearances.
That gap ended in a more prominent way with Marty Supreme, the Josh Safdie film released in late 2025 with Timothée Chalamet in the lead. It put her back in a high profile awards season conversation. She has described her acting as selective rather than finished, and the pattern supports that.
Rachel McAdams
McAdams had a busy run through the mid 2010s, with Spotlight, Doctor Strange and Game Night among her credits. She became a mother in 2018 and had a second child a couple of years later. She has spoken in interviews about stepping back from the pace of Hollywood to be at home.
She returned in 2023 with Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret, a role that drew warm reviews. She then worked with Sam Raimi on the thriller Send Help, which was scheduled for early 2026. Her approach has been to choose fewer projects rather than disappear entirely.
Sandra Bullock
Bullock adopted her son, Louis, in 2010 and her daughter, Laila, in 2015, and she has often said her kids come first. After the success of Bird Box in 2018, she worked sparingly. In 2022 she appeared in The Lost City and Bullet Train, then said she planned to take time away to focus on family.
Her next announced project was a return to a beloved role. Practical Magic 2, reuniting her with Nicole Kidman, was slated for a September 2026 release. I couldn’t confirm how it has performed, so it’s best viewed as a planned comeback rather than a settled one.
Julia Roberts
Roberts had twins, Hazel and Phinnaeus, in 2004 and a son, Henry, in 2007. She has said publicly that she scaled back her workload to be present for her family. Her output slowed in the following years compared with her 1990s peak, though she never fully stopped.
Her later work shows a steady return to more demanding roles, including Wonder, Ben Is Back and the series Homecoming. She also appeared in Leave the World Behind in 2023 and in After the Hunt, directed by Luca Guadagnino, in 2025. Her career looks less like a hard stop and restart than a deliberate dial turned down, then slowly back up.
