Long before arenas, award shows and streaming charts, many of music’s biggest voices were learning to blend, breathe and hold a harmony on Sunday mornings. Church choirs offered free training, a built-in audience and a repertoire that demanded range and feeling.

The eight artists below have all spoken publicly about their early church singing, or have well-documented roots there. Their paths differ, from gospel to soul to pop and country, but the starting point is shared.

Aretha Franklin

Aretha Franklin grew up in Detroit, where her father, the Rev. C. L. Franklin, led New Bethel Baptist Church. She sang in the church as a girl, and her first recordings, released in the 1950s, were gospel songs captured at the church.

Gospel phrasing never left her sound. When she became the Queen of Soul in the late 1960s, the call-and-response feel and emotional intensity of her singing traced straight back to that pulpit. In 1987 she became the first woman inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Whitney Houston began singing in the choir at New Hope Baptist Church in Newark, New Jersey. Her mother, Cissy Houston, was a celebrated gospel and soul singer who directed the church’s music program, so the training was close to home.

She first sang a solo in church as a young teenager, and she later credited those years with shaping her technique. That foundation showed in the powerful, controlled delivery that made her one of the best-selling artists in music history.

Sam Cooke

Sam Cooke was the son of a minister in Chicago and began performing as part of a family gospel group, the Singing Children. As a teenager he joined the Highway QCs, and then, in the early 1950s, he became lead singer of the famed gospel group the Soul Stirrers.

In 1957 he moved into pop, scoring a hit with “You Send Me.” His smooth, ringing tenor carried gospel’s emotional openness into mainstream soul, and many historians regard him as one of the genre’s pioneers.

Marvin Gaye grew up in Washington, D.C., where his father was a minister in the House of God church. He sang and played piano and drums in church from a young age, and he later said the church shaped his musical beginnings.

That early grounding fed his career at Motown, where he turned out hits like “I Heard It Through the Grapevine.” His 1971 album What’s Going On blended spiritual urgency with social commentary, a fitting echo of those early Sundays.

Alicia Keys is best known for her piano and soulful voice, but her musical education also leaned on gospel and church traditions. She has spoken about being drawn to the sounds of the church as she developed her style in New York.

Her debut album, Songs in A Minor, arrived in 2001 and won five Grammys the following year. Gospel-tinged chords and vocal runs remain part of her signature, nearly twenty-five years on.

Jennifer Hudson grew up on Chicago’s South Side and began singing in the choir at Pilgrim Baptist Church as a child. She has often said that church was where she first learned to perform.

After finishing seventh on American Idol in 2004, she won an Academy Award for her role in Dreamgirls. She has since earned a Grammy and, in 2022, completed the EGOT by winning a Tony as a producer of A Strange Loop.

Dolly Parton

Dolly Parton’s first public singing happened in church. She grew up in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee, and her grandfather was a Pentecostal preacher whose congregation gave her early stage experience.

That background still echoes in her catalog, which includes gospel material and songs like “Coat of Many Colors.” She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2022, a reminder of how far a small country church can launch a voice.

Beyoncé

Beyoncé sang in the choir at St. John’s United Methodist Church in Houston as a child. Her early years there ran alongside talent shows and the formation of the group that became Destiny’s Child.

She has remained one of the most decorated artists in Grammy history. Her layered vocal arrangements and use of choral harmony, heard across albums like Renaissance and Cowboy Carter, show how those early choir habits stuck.

Taken together, these eight stories show how often church choirs act as a launchpad. They teach discipline, harmony and the nerve to sing in front of people, and those lessons seem to travel well, whatever the genre.

Not every great singer began in a pew, of course. Still, it’s hard to ignore how many did, and how clearly their early training can be heard in the music that followed.
