9 Actors Who Trained as Dancers Before Acting

By Matthias Binder

Plenty of performers drift into acting from drama school or a lucky audition. Others arrive from the studio, with years of barre work, rehearsal and stage discipline already behind them.

Dance training tends to leave marks that are easy to spot on screen, such as posture, timing and physical control. Here are nine actors whose careers began with movement before dialogue.

Gene Kelly

Gene Kelly was born in Pittsburgh in 1912 and began dance lessons as a child. He later helped run a family dance school in his hometown, so teaching and choreography were part of his life before Hollywood noticed him. He reached Broadway in the early 1940s, notably in Pal Joey.

On film, he turned his athletic style into a signature, most famously in An American in Paris in 1951 and Singin’ in the Rain in 1952. He also co-directed Singin’ in the Rain with Stanley Donen. His screen work shows how a trained dancer could shape a film’s choreography as well as star in it.

Fred Astaire

Fred Astaire was born Frederic Austerlitz in Omaha in 1899. As a child he moved to New York with his sister Adele so the two could study dance. They became a vaudeville and Broadway act well before he made a single film.

After the partnership with Adele ended, Astaire moved to Hollywood and made Flying Down to Rio in 1933, which first paired him with Ginger Rogers. He received an honorary Academy Award in 1950 for his contributions to film musicals. His acting career grew directly out of a stage life built on dance.

Patrick Swayze

Patrick Swayze grew up in Houston, where his mother, Patsy Swayze, was a choreographer who ran a dance studio. He trained in ballet and later studied at major companies including the Harkness Ballet and the Joffrey Ballet in New York. Dance was his first profession, not a side skill.

He moved into acting in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Dirty Dancing in 1987 made full use of his training, and Ghost in 1990 confirmed that he could carry a drama as well. Few leading men of that era had such a deep technical background in movement.

Charlize Theron

Charlize Theron grew up in South Africa and studied ballet seriously as a teenager. After modeling work took her to Europe and then the United States, she pursued a ballet career in New York. A knee injury ended that path and pushed her toward Los Angeles and acting.

She won the Academy Award for Best Actress for Monster, in a role that earned wide praise. Her later action films, including Mad Max: Fury Road and Atomic Blonde, draw on her physical discipline. The same training that once aimed her at the ballet stage now shapes her stunt work.

Mikhail Baryshnikov was born in Riga in 1948 and trained at the Vaganova Academy in Leningrad. He became a leading dancer with the Kirov Ballet, then defected in Toronto in 1974. He is widely regarded as one of the great male ballet dancers of the twentieth century.

His acting career followed his dance fame. He earned an Academy Award nomination for The Turning Point in 1977, a film set in the ballet world. Later, many viewers knew him from his role as Aleksandr Petrovsky in Sex and the City, which showed a quieter, more dramatic side of his screen presence.

Ariana DeBose

Ariana DeBose was born in Wilmington, North Carolina, and built her early career as a dancer. She appeared on So You Think You Can Dance, then worked in Broadway ensembles, including the original cast of Hamilton. Those years gave her stage experience before she became a screen lead.

She played Anita in Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story, released in 2021. The performance won her the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, along with a Golden Globe and a BAFTA. The role relied heavily on dance, which was where she had started.

Julianne Hough

Julianne Hough grew up in Utah and competed in ballroom and other dance styles from a young age. At around ten years old she moved to London to study at the Italia Conti academy. Her training was intensive and international before she was a teenager.

She became a household name as a two time winner of Dancing with the Stars in the United States. Acting roles followed, including the 2011 remake of Footloose, Rock of Ages in 2012 and Safe Haven in 2013. Footloose in particular matched her skills to the material.

Jenna Dewan

Jenna Dewan trained in dance from childhood and worked professionally as a dancer before acting. She toured as a backup dancer for Janet Jackson, an experience that gave her a foothold in the entertainment industry. That background led naturally to dance heavy casting.

Her breakthrough film role was Step Up in 2006, in which she starred opposite Channing Tatum. She later moved into television drama and also hosted the NBC dance competition World of Dance. Her career has kept returning to the world where she first trained.

Natalie Portman

Natalie Portman was born in Jerusalem and studied dance as a child before acting took over. Her early training included ballet, which she returned to when preparing for a role years later. It gave her a base to build on, though she was no longer a full time dancer.

That preparation paid off in Black Swan, released in 2010, where she played a ballerina under intense pressure. She won the Academy Award for Best Actress for the performance. The film remains the clearest example of her early dance background shaping a major screen role.
