From 1989 to 1993, Saved by the Bell made Saturday mornings must-watch TV. What most people don’t realize is that the halls of Bayside High weren’t just home to Zack, Kelly, Slater, and Screech. They were also a quiet launching pad for actors who would go on to become some of Hollywood’s most recognizable names. Some showed up for a single scene. Others stuck around for a few episodes. Either way, the connection is real, and honestly, a little mind-blowing when you think about it. Let’s dive in.
1. Leah Remini – The One Who Kept Coming Back

Leah Remini is a name most people now associate with The King of Queens, where she played the lovable Carrie Heffernan for nearly a decade. She rose to fame as the queen in The King of Queens and later starred in another Kevin James series, Kevin Can Wait, and had roles in many TV series and movies, including the romantic comedy Second Act. What makes her Saved by the Bell connection especially memorable is that she wasn’t just some one-off background character.
Leah had a recurring role as Stacey Carosi in the Malibu Sands Beach Club episodes of Saved by the Bell. While most guest stars only appeared in one episode roles on the show, Leah Remini had a multi-episode arc and was one of Zack’s most serious girlfriends aside from Kelly. Honestly, fans who rewatched the show as adults were stunned to realize the woman trading lines with Zack would one day become a household name in her own right. It’s one of those moments where hindsight makes everything click.
2. Denise Richards – The Fake Drowning Scene

Denise Richards has had a long and successful career, most notably as a Bond Girl in 1999’s The World Is Not Enough and starring in Wild Things. She became one of the most sought-after faces in Hollywood throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s. Before all of that, though, she was just a young actress taking whatever roles came her way.
One of Denise’s first acting roles was on Saved by the Bell. She played the girl that Slater “saved” from drowning in the ocean. Denise once said that she was embarrassed filming that scene in a bikini in front of tons of people and a cast that had been working together for years. It’s one of those early-career moments that’s equal parts awkward and endearing. From faking a drowning at the beach club to nearly sinking a nuclear submarine in a Bond film. Now that’s a career arc.
3. Eric Dane – Before He Was Dr. McSteamy

Eric Dane will always be remembered as Dr. McSteamy on Grey’s Anatomy. He now stars as Cal Jacobs in the HBO series Euphoria. For millions of fans he became one of television’s most magnetic presences, a genuinely compelling actor with serious dramatic chops. It’s almost impossible to picture him as anything other than commanding and polished.
But years before he appeared in the infamous towel scene, he played Tad Pogue for one episode of Saved by the Bell. In season three, Tad was a volleyball player and Zack Morris’ rival for the affections of Stacey Carosi. He only appeared for one episode. Fifteen years before he scrubbed into Grey’s Anatomy’s Dr. Mark “McSteamy” Sloan, Dane was just another doof in a neon tank top making trouble for Zack and the gang. That image alone is worth pausing on for a moment.
4. Tori Spelling – Screech’s Unlikely Girlfriend

Best known for playing Donna Martin on Beverly Hills, 90210, Spelling first guest-starred on Saved by the Bell the same week 90210 premiered. That’s right. On the very same week that one of the biggest teenage dramas in TV history was hitting the airwaves, Tori Spelling was simultaneously making an impression over on NBC. That’s a uniquely 1990s kind of coincidence.
Tori got her start on Saved by the Bell as Violet Bickerstaff, the geeky girlfriend to Dustin Diamond’s geeky Screech. Tori Spelling was only in three episodes of Saved by the Bell, but she made a huge impact as Violet Bickerstaff. In fact, she stands out as the one character who happily dated Screech. Given how beloved the Screech character was, that made Violet a fan favorite too, even years later.
5. Christine Taylor – The SAT Tutor

Christine Taylor played Marcia Brady in The Brady Bunch Movie perfectly. She starred in other movies such as Zoolander and Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story. Christine is also well-known for great guest starring roles in some of our favorite sitcoms. She also appeared memorably on Seinfeld and Friends. It’s hard to think of a more reliably funny and versatile actress from that era of television.
A lesser-known role that Christine played was Heather on Saved by the Bell. Heather asks Zach to tutor her after he miraculously scored a 1500 on the SATs. It’s the kind of subplot that screams early 1990s in the best possible way. Taylor made the teen show rounds, as she was a regular on Hey Dude and also guest starred on Life Goes On and Blossom. She was clearly building a formidable resume during those years, even if nobody quite realized how far she would go.
6. Scott Wolf – The Background Regular

Here’s the thing about Scott Wolf. Most people remember him as Bailey Salinger on the hit family drama Party of Five, a role that ran from 1994 to 2000 and turned him into one of the breakout faces of that decade. In television, he is known for his roles as Bailey Salinger in Party of Five, as Jeremy Kates in The Nine, as Donnie Ryan in Perception, and as Carson Drew in Nancy Drew. That’s a long, impressive list.
Wolf appeared in eight episodes of Saved by the Bell between 1990 and 1992, but he was only ever technically an extra. He landed a recurring role as a waiter at the burger joint that served as a hangout for Kelly, AC, Screech, and company on the cheesy teenage sitcom Saved by the Bell. After various guest spots came the role that “changed everything” for Wolf, Party of Five, from 1994 to 2000. Sometimes serving burgers at The Max is exactly the kind of experience that puts you on the map.
7. James Marsden – From Chad to the X-Men

James Marsden went from playing Cyclops in the X-Men franchise to starring in beloved films like Enchanted and Westworld. He became known as one of Hollywood’s most charming leading men, equally comfortable in action blockbusters and romantic comedies. It’s a career trajectory that nobody would have predicted from his early TV appearances.
Before James Marsden was charming everyone with his leading roles in movies such as X-Men, Enchanted, The Best of Me, and 27 Dresses, he was getting his start with one of his first roles in a season one episode of Saved by the Bell: The New Class. Marsden played homecoming King Chad Westerfield, who pretends to befriend everyone to get the votes, only for it to be exposed that he really is a bully who picks on “nerds.” Marsden was going by Jimmy at the time. Everyone has to start somewhere, and playing a teen bully named Chad is apparently as good a place as any.
8. Milo Ventimiglia – The Hospital Volunteer Nobody Noticed

Milo Ventimiglia is one of those actors who seems to have always existed in popular culture. Between his run as the brooding Jess Mariano on Gilmore Girls and his Emmy-nominated performance as Jack Pearson on This Is Us, he carved out a legacy as one of the most emotionally compelling TV actors of his generation. Milo Ventimiglia’s best-rated performances remain his romantic leads, from Jess to Jack Pearson on This Is Us.
Before he became associated with his fan-favorite Gilmore Girls character Jess Mariano, Milo Ventimiglia appeared in one episode of the Saved by the Bell spin-off, The New Class. Milo Ventimiglia played Greg in season 4, episode 13, “The Final Curtain,” a character who volunteers at a hospital where Eric Little is spending time. Around the time of his Saved by the Bell: The New Class role, Ventimiglia appeared on other teen series The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and Sabrina the Teenage Witch. He was clearly everywhere during those years, even if nobody was paying full attention yet.
9. Patrick Muldoon – The Most Hated Man in Bayside History

Patrick Muldoon was a 90s soap star, playing Austin Reed on Days of Our Lives. From there, he moved to the nighttime soap Melrose Place and then Starship Troopers. A few Lifetime movies followed, and he is now a producer and singer/songwriter. It’s an interesting career path that has taken him through quite a few chapters of Hollywood.
Some remember Patrick Muldoon as the most hated man in Saved by the Bell history. After all, he was the awful guy who broke up Zack and Kelly, and then had the audacity to break Kelly’s heart. His early role in Days of Our Lives as Austin Reed followed early appearances on who’s the Boss. Patrick won the Soap Opera Digest award for best new actor and spent the next three years at NBC. If you grew up watching Saved by the Bell, you probably still feel a twinge of irritation at the mention of his character. Mission accomplished, honestly. Making an audience feel that strongly is a genuine skill.
It’s genuinely fascinating how many now-famous faces passed through Bayside High before the world knew their names. Saved by the Bell was a young show, so many of their guest roles were played by up-and-coming actors. Some of these actors went on to become stars in their own right, and might look back fondly on the show that gave them their start. From a fake drowning scene on a California beach to the floors of Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, from a neon tank top to an X-Men uniform, these nine actors prove that every career has a humble beginning.
