9 TV Shows That Replaced Their Lead Actor Partway Through the Series

Losing a lead actor is one of the riskiest things that can happen to a TV show. Viewers bond with a face and a voice, so a swap can feel like a betrayal. Yet some series have pulled it off, either by recasting the same character or by shifting the story to a new lead.

The nine shows below are well documented examples. Some used in-story tricks, others simply carried on, and the results were mixed. Here’s how each one handled the change.

1. Doctor Who

The BBC series, which began in 1963, built the replacement into its premise. When William Hartnell left the title role, the show introduced regeneration, which let a new actor, Patrick Troughton, take over in 1966. That clever device is a big reason the show has lasted for decades.

Since then many actors have held the role, including Tom Baker, David Tennant, Matt Smith and Jodie Whittaker. Ncuti Gatwa took over in 2023 as the Fifteenth Doctor. It’s the clearest example of a show where changing the lead is part of the design.

2. Bewitched

Bewitched, the 1960s sitcom, replaced an actor playing the male lead. Dick York played Darrin Stephens in the first five seasons. Dick Sargent took over the role from the sixth season onward.

York left because of health problems, and the show did not explain the change in the story. Viewers simply saw a different Darrin. It became a famous case of the unannounced recast, often called a “Darrin switch” in TV slang.

3. Roseanne

Roseanne had a different problem, the role of Becky Conner. Lecy Goranson played her early on, then Sarah Chalke took over for a stretch, and Goranson later returned. The show even joked about the swap.

That’s a supporting role rather than the title lead, so it stands as a lighter example. Still, it shows how comedies sometimes wink at recasting instead of hiding it.

4. The Defenders and the Sitcom Lead Shift in Two and a Half Men

Two and a Half Men is a better fit here. Charlie Sheen starred as Charlie Harper for eight seasons, and he left the show in 2011 after a public dispute with the producers. Ashton Kutcher joined as a new lead character, Walden Schmidt, rather than a recast of Charlie.

The series continued for several more seasons and ended in 2015. Charlie’s exit was written as a death, so the show handled it as a story point. It remains a high-profile case of a hit comedy replacing its star.

5. ER

ER launched in 1994 with Anthony Edwards, George Clooney, Noah Wyle and others in a large ensemble. As the years passed, the original leads left one by one, and new doctors took the front of the story. Over fifteen seasons, the show’s center of gravity moved.

This is a gradual replacement rather than a single swap. It worked because the hospital itself was the main character, and fresh faces could step in without breaking the premise.

6. The Good Doctor-Style Handoff on NCIS

NCIS offers a clearer case. Mark Harmon played Leroy Jethro Gibbs from the start in 2003 and left as a series regular in 2021, during season 19. The show kept going with Gary Cole joining as a new team leader, Alden Parker.

Harmon has made occasional return appearances since, but the series now centers on a different lead. That’s a long-running procedural adapting to the departure of its face.

7. House of Cards-Style Reset in The Office (US)

The US version of The Office saw Steve Carell leave as Michael Scott in 2011, after season seven. The show carried on through season nine, ending in 2013. Producers tried new managers, including a character played by James Spader.

The ensemble kept the show going, though many fans felt the later seasons lacked the same spark. It’s a useful example of an ensemble comedy trying to survive without its central figure.

8. Charmed and the Cast Shake-Up

Charmed featured three sisters as its core. Shannen Doherty left after season three, and Rose McGowan joined as a new sister, Paige. The show ran eight seasons, ending in 2006.

The change worked in the story because Paige was introduced as a half-sister. It’s a good example of replacing a lead with a new character rather than recasting.

9. Dallas

Dallas, the long-running 1978 drama, had a famous recast of a major character. Donna Reed played Miss Ellie in season 12 after Barbara Bel Geddes left for health reasons, and Bel Geddes then returned. The change drew plenty of attention at the time.

That kind of swap shows how soaps and primetime dramas sometimes brought actors back when a recast didn’t land. It’s a reminder that viewers’ attachment to a role can be strong.

Taken together, these shows show there’s no single formula. Some baked change into the concept, some wrote the star out, and some just hoped audiences would adjust. What matters most is whether the story gives viewers a reason to stay.

A lead can change, but the show’s heart has to remain. When it does, audiences often follow along.
