Las Vegas Strip — Workers installed the first pieces of structural steel this week at the Athletics’ $2 billion ballpark site on the former Tropicana property, a clear sign that the project has entered a visible new phase.[1] Crews also began assembling initial roof trusses on the ground, preparing for elevation in the coming months. The development underscores steady advancement toward an early 2028 opening for the 33,000-seat venue.[2]

Bowl Steel Emerges as Site Transforms

A’s president Marc Badain highlighted the rapid pace during a recent update. “The bowl of steel on the third and fourth deck is now visible… You can see it over the fence line,” he said. “The workforce has done an amazing job. They feel really good about where they are.”[1]

The lower concourse deck has nearly formed a complete circle around the 9-acre footprint. Suite spaces started taking shape on the second deck level, while the second-level decking reached about 60 percent completion. Between 400 and 500 workers populated the site daily, contributing to more than 196,000 craft hours logged so far.[3]

Foundation work concluded earlier this year, with over 1,000 pilings driven into the ground. These efforts laid the groundwork for the current structural phase.[2]

$300 Million Invested, On Track for Completion

Team owner John Fisher funded the initial $300 million in construction through equity, keeping the project on budget without yet drawing public funds or loans. Public financing will provide up to $380 million, supplemented by a $300 million construction loan. The Las Vegas Stadium Authority reported $1.2 million generated from a ballpark tax district tied to sales and use taxes.[4]

Executives confirmed the timeline remains intact despite the massive scale. “We’re nearing two years left to completion,” noted project director Tyler Van Eeckhaut of Mortenson-McCarthy.[4] The Athletics secured over $1 billion in building permits from Clark County, including approvals for foundations, concrete structures, and primary steel.[3]

Iconic Design Set to Define the Strip

The stadium will feature a distinctive fixed roof composed of five curved metal panels resembling baseball pennants, offering shade and climate control suited to the desert environment. A massive cable-net glass wall will provide Strip views from the lower concourse, enhancing the fan experience. Eighty-four percent of seating will sit between the foul poles for optimal sightlines.[2][3]

Surrounding developments include a three-acre plaza and Bally’s planned hotel-casino complex with towers, parking, retail, and a 3,000-seat arena by 2030. Two of six massive roof-support buttresses stood complete, with the rest following soon.[3]

  • 33,000 capacity with multi-tiered seating
  • Climate-controlled interior
  • World’s largest cable-net window
  • Jumbotron and premium suites
  • Integration with Strip entertainment

Upcoming Phases Promise Stadium Silhouette

Steel work in the bowl accelerated this spring, building on concourse pours that covered half the decks by February. Roof truss assembly on site precedes lifting, with placement tentatively scheduled for early June. Badain anticipated the frame would take shape through summer and early fall.[1][3]

May milestones include perimeter steel placement, roof steel deliveries, shoring towers, and precast concrete for concourses and suites. Escalators arrived recently for installation. Bally’s supporting infrastructure must commence by January 2027 to align with Opening Day.[4]

Key Takeaways

  • $300 million spent; $2 billion total on schedule for 2028.
  • First steel installed; roof trusses assembling for June lift.
  • 400-500 daily workers driving visible transformation.

This ballpark stands poised to anchor MLB’s presence on the Strip, blending sports with Las Vegas spectacle. As steel rises against the skyline, the venue promises to draw fans for generations. What do you think of the progress? Share in the comments.
