Denver – Jack Eichel fired a wrist shot past Mackenzie Blackwood just 1:19 into overtime to deliver a 3-2 victory for the Vegas Golden Knights over the Colorado Avalanche. The dramatic win secured Vegas’s spot in the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the eighth time in nine seasons. Carter Hart’s stellar performance in net anchored the resilient road warriors as they wrapped up a successful four-game trip.[1][2]
A Tense Overtime Decider
Devon Toews nearly ended the game early in overtime on a two-on-one rush, but Hart’s stick deflected the shot wide. The rebound fell to Eichel, who seized the moment with a solo break down the right side. He wired a precise shot from the faceoff circle over Blackwood’s pad for his 26th goal of the season and third overtime winner this year.[3]
Eichel praised Hart’s clutch save that set up his chance. “Just an incredible save by ‘Hartsy’ down one end, and puck squirted out,” Eichel said. “We’re probably not there in overtime if it wasn’t for some of the tremendous saves by our goaltender.”[1]
Power Plays Swing Early Momentum
The first period featured back-and-forth special teams action. Colorado struck first at 9:17 on Devon Toews’s power-play tally, assisted by Brock Nelson and Martin Necas, after Hart got a piece but watched it trickle in. Vegas answered quickly at 13:47 when Mark Stone deflected a Mitch Marner shot from the blue line, with Tomas Hertl tipping it into his path for the power-play equalizer.[4]
Stone’s hand-eye coordination shone as he settled the puck and backhanded it home, his 27th goal and third in two games. The period ended 1-1 amid penalties on both sides. Vegas went 1-for-4 on the power play overall while killing off 2-of-3 chances.[5]
Second-Period Surge and Tie
Pavel Dorofeyev wasted no time in the second, ripping a one-timer from the left circle at 2:09 for his career-high 36th goal, third-most in franchise history. Ivan Barbashev and Kaedan Korczak earned the assists after Barbashev fed him perfectly from the goal line. The tally gave Vegas a brief 2-1 edge.[4]
Colorado leveled it at 10:56 when Nick Blankenburg’s shot caromed off the post, Hart’s back, and in, with Nicolas Roy credited for the assist. Neither team scored in a scoreless third despite chances, including Hart’s pad stop on Nathan MacKinnon late. The stage was set for overtime drama.[2]
Goaltending Steals the Spotlight
Carter Hart stood tall with 30 saves on 32 shots, posting a.938 save percentage in his fourth straight win since returning from injury. He survived bad bounces, including goals off his chest and back, and denied MacKinnon repeatedly. Hart called the stretch games “meaningful,” noting Vegas found its legs to pressure Colorado.[2]
| Goaltender | Team | Saves | Shots Against | Save % |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Carter Hart | VGK | 30 | 32 | .938 |
| Mackenzie Blackwood | COL | 26 | 29 | .897 |
Blackwood kept Colorado alive with key stops but faltered on the overtime rush.[3]
Playoff Push Under New Leadership
John Tortorella improved to 5-0-1 since taking over on March 29, guiding a group hampered by sickness and fatigue. “I’m the fortunate one to come into a group like this that’s pretty much ready,” Tortorella said. “They stuck with it tonight, and found a way.” Vegas finished the road trip 3-0-1, extending a points streak to eight games (5-0-3).[1]
The victory boosted Vegas to 37-26-17, leapfrogging Edmonton for first in the Pacific Division with two games left. Colorado, already Presidents’ Trophy winners at 52-16-11, dropped to 3-2-1 in their last six.[5]
