Male, Maldives – Three Finnish technical divers are scheduled to start retrieving the bodies of two Italian divers who died inside a remote underwater cave system in Vaavu Atoll. The operation follows the discovery of all four missing Italians on Monday, five days after they failed to return from an exploration dive. A local military diver had already died during an earlier attempt to reach the group.
Discovery Ends Prolonged Search
The four Italians disappeared on Thursday while exploring a cave at roughly 50 meters. Their instructor was found outside the entrance the same day. Searches were halted after the military diver’s death but resumed on Monday with support from the Finnish team. Officials confirmed the bodies lie together deep inside the third and largest segment of the cave system.
Depth and Safety Limits Create Major Hurdles
The bodies rest at approximately 60 meters, well beyond the 30-meter legal limit for recreational diving in the Maldives. This extreme depth requires specialized equipment and training that standard teams lack. The Finnish divers, deployed by the Divers’ Alert Network Europe, bring experience in confined, high-risk environments that matches the conditions inside the cave.
Advanced Equipment Supports the Mission
The team relies on closed-circuit rebreathers that recycle exhaled gas and remove carbon dioxide. These systems allow significantly longer dives than traditional open-circuit scuba gear. Maldives police and military personnel will assist once the bodies reach shallower waters for handover to authorities.
Two-Stage Recovery Plan
Officials outlined a clear schedule for the operation:
- Two bodies will be brought to the surface on Tuesday.
- The remaining two will be recovered on Wednesday.
- Coast guard vessels will transport each body to police once it reaches 30 meters.
The approach minimizes time spent at dangerous depths while ensuring careful handling throughout the process. The recovery marks the final stage of a difficult multinational effort that has already claimed one life. Authorities continue to coordinate closely with Italian officials as the operation moves forward.
