The Las Vegas Raiders ended months of speculation Thursday night by selecting Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza with the top overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. After a disappointing 3-14 season, the franchise viewed Mendoza as the cornerstone for its rebuild under general manager John Spytek. Spytek emphasized the quarterback’s winning mentality and personal qualities that stood out during the evaluation process.[1][2]

A College Career That Demanded Attention

Fernando Mendoza arrived at Indiana after starting his career at California, where he appeared in 20 games and threw for 4,712 yards and 30 touchdowns.[1] His true breakout came in 2025 with the Hoosiers. Mendoza led the team to its first conference championship since 1967, an undefeated record, and the program’s first national title.

Awards poured in that season. He completed 72 percent of his passes for 3,535 yards and 41 touchdowns, while posting an 8-to-0 touchdown-to-interception ratio in the College Football Playoff.[1] Mendoza became Indiana’s first Heisman Trophy winner and claimed the Walter Camp Award, Maxwell Award, AP Player of the Year, Davey O’Brien Award, Manning Award, and Big Ten MVP honors. Such dominance made him the consensus top prospect.

Pre-Draft Interactions That Sealed the Deal

John Spytek pointed to Mendoza’s performances away from the field as pivotal. During interviews at the NFL Combine, the quarterback demonstrated exceptional film recall and self-awareness. Spytek noted an honesty that set Mendoza apart from other candidates.[3]

“I’m a big believer in the interactions… he was just always authentically himself. He was endearing. You could see the driven, almost the maniacal, driven part of it that makes a great QB,” Spytek said. “His recall was incredible… There was an honesty and a self-awareness to it… and he had it.”[3] These moments convinced the Raiders that Mendoza possessed the intangibles needed for NFL success.

Physical Tools and Cultural Fit Align Perfectly

Beyond personality, Mendoza’s physical profile matched the Raiders’ West Coast offense. Spytek highlighted his size, arm strength, accuracy, and athleticism. “He’s big. He can see downfield. He can see over the middle of the field. He can throw those balls. He’s athletic, so all the boots and the keepers that we like to run, he’ll do well with,” the GM explained.[3]

Off the field, Mendoza’s background resonated deeply. Spytek described him as raised right, family-oriented, accountable, smart, and hardworking. “It’s about his team, it’s about winning, it’s about doing the right thing, being accountable to the whole organization,” Spytek added. The stars aligned, as the GM put it, for this selection.[4]

No Room for Trade Talks

The Raiders held firm on the No. 1 spot despite interest from other teams. Spytek confirmed they rejected all offers to move down. “We had a few calls [about trading up]. The answer was no. No was in a complete sentence,” he stated.[3]

Analysts praised the decision. One review gave the pick an A grade, noting Mendoza offered a high floor as the clear top quarterback available. The organization prioritized securing its future signal-caller over chasing future assets.[2]

What Matters Now:
– Authentic leadership shone in interviews.
– Ideal physical match for Raiders’ scheme.
– Unwavering commitment to the top pick.

Mendoza joins a storied Raiders lineage as the fifth Heisman winner drafted by the team.[1] As Las Vegas enters a new era, the quarterback’s blend of proven production, technical skills, and character provides a foundation for sustained contention. Spytek’s confidence suggests the franchise finally found its long-term answer at the position.
