Veteran quarterback Russell Wilson paid a visit to the New York Jets’ facility this week, fueling speculation about a possible reunion in the New York area.[1][2] The 37-year-old free agent, who resides nearby, met with team officials amid the Jets’ search for experienced depth behind starter Geno Smith. No deal appeared imminent following the session on Monday night.
A Familiar Face Returns to the Tri-State Area
Russell Wilson spent last season with the New York Giants, starting three games and appearing in three others for a total of six outings. He completed 69 of 119 passes for 831 yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions before the team turned to rookie Jaxson Dart.[1] That one-year, $10.5 million contract has expired, leaving him unsigned as the 2026 offseason progresses.
The Jets hosted Wilson at their Florham Park training center, a location just 25 miles from the Giants’ facility.[3] Connections facilitated the meeting: Jets general manager Darren Mougey worked in Denver during Wilson’s two-year stint there from 2022 to 2023, and head coach Aaron Glenn along with offensive coordinator Frank Reich also participated.[3] Wilson’s local residence made the arrangement straightforward after the team wrapped up draft business.
Jets Bolster QB Room Post-Draft
Geno Smith holds the starting job after the Jets acquired the 35-year-old from the Las Vegas Raiders in March.[1] Smith, who started 15 games for the Raiders last season, has voiced support for adding a seasoned backup, specifically naming Wilson based on their overlapping time in Seattle during 2020 and 2021. The current depth chart features Bailey Zappe, Brady Cook, and fourth-round draft pick Cade Klubnik, obtained by trading up on April 25.[1]
Former backup Tyrod Taylor entered free agency, prompting the Jets to explore options like Wilson. His 10 Pro Bowls and Super Bowl win with the Seahawks in 2013 bring undeniable pedigree, even after recent team hops: Pittsburgh in 2024 and the Giants in 2025.[2] Smith has praised Wilson’s work ethic from their shared past.
Dismissing Retirement Whispers
Speculation swirled around Wilson’s future after his Giants benching, including potential retirement or a pivot to broadcasting modeled after Tony Romo.[4] Yet the quarterback dismissed such talk emphatically. “I’m not blinking,” he stated, affirming his intent to continue playing.[5]
Wilson highlighted his capabilities during training at the Dallas Mavericks’ facility despite a Grade 2 hamstring tear sustained in practice. “I know what I’m capable of. I think I showed that in Dallas, and I want to be able to do that again,” he said.[5] He plans to stay healthy and compete for a roster spot in 2026.
Backup Role or Bigger Plans?
The Jets represent one landing spot in a market where Wilson seeks to revive his career without relocating far. Other teams eyed him earlier, but his age and recent stats position him for a No. 2 role rather than starter duties.[5]
- Jets: Backup to Geno Smith, leveraging local ties and mutual respect.
- Potential elsewhere: Teams needing temporary depth, per earlier projections.
While TV opportunities loom as a lucrative alternative, Wilson’s actions signal focus on the field for now. The Jets hold off on decisions, leaving his next chapter open.
