Las Vegas man granted probation twice accused of walking into random woman’s home, shooting her

Man sentenced last September to probation, records say

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A man two Las Vegas judges recently sentenced to probation faces new charges for allegedly walking into a random woman’s home and shooting her.

Kevin Filliger, 30, faces several charges, including attempted murder, burglary, and kidnapping, for an incident Tuesday in the southeast valley, records said.

A person called 911 around 9 a.m. that day, saying her neighbor was shot near Desert Inn Road and Nellis Boulevard. The shooting victim told police an unknown man and his dog came into her home through an open garage door.

The man, later identified as Filliger, immediately shot the woman in the elbow upon entering the garage, police said. After the shooting, Filliger “grabbed her around her throat and pushed her up against the wall,” documents said. The victim was able to get away and barricade herself in another room.

As officers responded to a neighbor’s 911 call, they spotted Filliger walking nearby, they said.

Filliger, a convicted felon, is prohibited from owning or having a firearm.

Speaking with officers at the hospital, the shooting victim told police Filliger shot her, pointed the gun at her head and then covered her face with a pillow, documents said. She told police she never met Filliger and she had never seen him before.

Filliger declined to speak with detectives and appeared “to be licking the window” while inside a patrol car, police said.

“[A detective] provided Kevin a piece of paper and pen to see if Kevin would write something in order to communicate with detectives,” police said in court documents. “Kevin wrote, ‘Shot her’ on the piece of paper. Kevin would not speak with detectives as they attempted to obtain his side of the story.”

Officers later obtained surveillance footage from neighbors, which they said showed him walking toward the victim’s home and then running away minutes later, police said.

In addition to the attempted murder and kidnapping charges, police also arrested Filliger for violating probation in two cases, records said.

In October 2023, police arrested Filliger on a charge of attempted carrying a concealed firearm or other deadly weapon. Last September, Filliger’s sentencing in that case was delayed because he picked up a new charge, records said. Prosecutors with the Clark County District Attorney’s Office then filed documents asking a judge to revoke Filliger’s bail.

The new charge, attempted ownership or possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, was filed on Sept. 1, records said.

On Sept. 24, Clark County District Court Judge Bita Yeager placed Filliger on probation in the 2023 case. On Sept. 25, Clark County District Court Judge Michael Villani sentenced Filliger to probation in the second case.

Both judges sentenced Filliger with the stipulation he would go to prison should he violate their orders, which included no weapons.

Filliger was denied bail due to his new charges. He refused to appear for his initial probable cause hearing on Wednesday and was scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 3.
