Castle Rock – A backyard grill malfunction next door turned into a family’s worst nightmare on April 22, when flames spread to their home in Castle Rock, Colorado. The fire ravaged bedrooms and forced Hannah, her husband Chris, and their three young children out of their residence. No humans were hurt, though the family’s cat did not survive.[1][2]

Emergency crews responded shortly after 2 p.m. to reports of fire at 283 Hampstead Avenue in the Founders Village community.[3] What began as a possible single-structure incident quickly escalated, with multiple 911 calls noting flames involving two homes and threatening a third. Castle Rock Fire and Rescue upgraded to a third alarm, deploying additional resources amid windy conditions reminiscent of past destructive blazes.[4]

Firefighters contained the spread by around 3:15 p.m., evacuating three nearby houses in the process. Officials noted major roof damage to at least two properties, with crews staying on site for overhaul and cleanup. The precise origin remained under investigation at the time, though a community fundraiser attributed it to a neighboring grill.[1]

Family’s Fortunate Timing Saves Lives

The children – a 9-year-old and 3-year-old twins – were safely at school when the fire broke out, sparing them immediate danger. Chris managed to escape the home with the family dog, which remained unharmed. Their cat, Dolly, hid amid exploding windows but was later rescued by firefighters; sadly, she had to be euthanized due to injuries.[1]

Hannah’s friend and fundraiser organizer Tiffany Blackburn described the event starkly: “On April 22nd, the nightmare we all fear happened. Hannah’s family’s home caught fire as a result of their next-door neighbor’s grill.”[1] The quick actions of first responders prevented worse outcomes, as no civilians or firefighters suffered injuries.

Devastation Hits Hard at Home

Hannah’s bedroom and the twins’ room suffered total losses, leaving the family unable to return soon to retrieve unaffected belongings. The fire’s path highlighted vulnerabilities in closely spaced suburban homes, where embers can leap between roofs rapidly. Two residences bore the brunt, with significant structural compromise.[4]

Now displaced with their dog, the family faces urgent needs for hotel stays or short-term rentals while assessing insurance and repairs. Blackburn praised Hannah’s character, calling her “the most giving, helpful, and selfless person I know,” underscoring the personal toll beyond material damage.[1]

Community Rallies with Support

A GoFundMe campaign launched by Blackburn sought $7,500 to cover essentials and housing, raising over $3,700 from 34 donors within days. Local Facebook groups amplified the call, urging Castle Rock residents to contribute to the “sweet family” affected.[1]

As investigators probe the cause, the incident serves as a stark reminder of grill safety in fire-prone areas. Families like Hannah’s now rebuild amid uncertainty, leaning on neighbors for the long road ahead.

Incidents like this underscore the fragility of home in windy springs, prompting fresh calls for vigilance around outdoor cooking.
