North Las Vegas Police use leprechaun disguise to catch dashing, distracted drivers

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — As a part of the Leprechaun within the Crosswalk initiative, a police officer dressed as a leprechaun handed out tickets as an alternative of fine luck to drivers who didn’t observe site visitors legal guidelines.

On Tuesday morning, North Las Vegas Police Lieutenant Kenny Lee dressed up in a vivid inexperienced leprechaun costume forward of St. Patrick’s Day. He and his staff had been on the lookout for speeders and distracted drivers who ignored flashing yellow lights at pedestrian crosswalks.

The Leprechaun within the Crosswalk initiative is a part of the division’s ongoing efforts to teach and implement site visitors security legal guidelines, reminding drivers to concentrate to folks strolling on the road and to decelerate.

“When people are crossing the roadway, they have to obey the traffic law, and they have to yield to pedestrians crossing,” Lt. Lee mentioned. “They also need to slow down their speed. Speed, it kills.”

Lt. Lee mentioned velocity has performed a serious function in deadly crashes, particularly alongside busy corridors like Craig Street and Ferrell Avenue.  

“[That] has been historically one of our busier intersections. On Craig Road, the speed limit is 45 mph, and typically, motorists drive 10 to 15, sometimes 20 mph over the speed limit,” Lt. Lee mentioned. 

There have been 16 pedestrian fatalities in Clark County, together with two in North Las Vegas, thus far this 12 months.

Police made two DUI arrests within the morning earlier than the “Leprechaun in the Crosswalk” initiative. Throughout the initiative, 74 stops had been made, 72 citations got, 17 warnings got and 1 arrest.

“If you can’t see a pedestrian crossing in a bright green uniform, you may want to open up your eyes and pay attention,” Lt. Lee mentioned.
