LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — February 14th celebrates one of many best gestures of affection – giving an organ.

Nationwide Donor Day is acknowledged yearly on Valentine’s Day to acknowledge those that have given the best present of life. Proper now, about 700 Nevadans are ready for a significant organ transplant. Throughout the nation, a whole lot of hundreds extra are hoping for one more likelihood at life.

“When somebody signs up to be a donor, and they become a donor, they can save and heal up to eight lives through organ donation,” Joseph Ferreira, President and CEO of Nevada Donor Community, mentioned. “Up to 75 lives [can be saved] through tissue ocular and donation, which makes it critically important for people to sign up.”

Becky Mintz is a coronary heart transplant recipient. She thought of herself an atypical spouse and mom, working and caring for her household.

“I was 44 years old. I thought I was healthy,” Mintz mentioned.

That was till July 14, 2008, when she suffered a large coronary heart assault brought on by two separate blood clots. She awakened the following day with a 5-pound left ventricular help machine implanted in her abdomen as she clung to life. She spent the following a number of weeks out and in of the hospital.

Lastly, in October of that very same 12 months, she was added to the transplant checklist.

“I got listed, and on the tenth day, my surgeon came in and he goes, ‘Today’s your day’, and I said ‘For what? Where are you sending me now?’”

That was greater than a decade in the past. Right this moment, Mintz is 16 years post-transplant and doing higher than she might have imagined, due to the generosity of her 18-year-old donor, Eddie.

“I wanted to see my daughter graduate high school. I did,” mentioned Mintz. “I wanted to see her graduate college. I did. I wanted to see her get married and go down the aisle with her and dance with her at her wedding. I did. And then I said, ‘Okay, I hope I get to see grandkids’, and now I have a grandson who is 16 months old.”

She and her household have met with Eddie’s household on many events, a bittersweet connection of grief and gratitude between the 2 households.

“This is Eddie’s heart, and I am the caretaker of his heart,” Mintz mentioned.

Now, she’s encouraging others to say ‘yes’ to saving and therapeutic lives.

“When you say yes to organ donation and you become an organ donor, you don’t just save the patient. You are saving their family and sometimes your own family,” Mintz added. “Grieving is hard and for your family to know that you will live on and help someone else can be very healing.”
