Florida’s LGBTQ residents have watched as state lawmakers advanced measures that directly affect their daily lives, from education policies to healthcare access. Joe Saunders now leads the Equality Florida Action PAC, the state’s largest pro-equality political committee, with a focused strategy to shift outcomes in the 2026 elections. The move places an experienced former lawmaker at the center of efforts to expand representation at every level of government.
Experience That Shapes the New Role
Saunders brings more than a decade of direct involvement in Florida politics and national advocacy work. He served as a state representative after winning election in 2012, becoming one of the first openly gay members of the Florida House. Later roles at the Human Rights Campaign gave him oversight of legislative and election programs across fourteen states, with particular emphasis on civil rights efforts in the South.
His earlier work began as a student activist at the University of Central Florida in Orlando. Since joining Equality Florida in 2017, Saunders advanced to senior political director before this promotion to executive director of the affiliated PAC. That progression positions him to coordinate both fundraising and candidate support with established networks already in place.
Record of Electoral Wins
Under programs Saunders helped direct, the PAC supported several candidates who went on to hold prominent offices. Those victories include Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried, state Sens. Carlos Guillermo Smith and Shevrin Jones, state Rep. Anna Eskamani, Tampa Mayor Jane Castor, Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis, Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, and Miami Mayor Eileen Higgins.
Each of these outcomes demonstrated the committee’s ability to mobilize pro-equality voters in competitive races. The current cash balance of approximately $164,000 provides a starting point for scaling similar efforts in the next cycle.
Targets for 2026 and Beyond
Saunders has outlined three main priorities. First, the PAC intends to recruit and back more LGBTQ candidates for local and state offices. Second, it aims to reduce the current Republican supermajority in the Florida Legislature. Third, it plans to secure pro-equality majorities on school boards and city councils where policy decisions often have the most immediate impact.
Supporters expect these steps to translate into greater protection for community interests during legislative sessions. The approach relies on identifying districts where turnout among pro-equality voters can decide close contests rather than spreading resources evenly across the state.
Backing from Democratic Leaders
Senate Democratic Leader-designate Shevrin Jones, Florida’s first openly gay senator, endorsed the choice of Saunders. Jones noted that the community faces sustained pressure and requires strategic direction to respond effectively. He described Saunders as the right person for the current political environment.
The appointment signals continuity with past successful campaigns while introducing fresh coordination for the 2026 ballot. Observers will watch how quickly the PAC converts its existing resources into measurable gains in candidate recruitment and voter outreach.
