By Miles Cooper March 7, 2025

Tensions flared within the Home on Thursday as lawmakers voted to censure Rep. Al Inexperienced (D-Texas) for his disruptive protest throughout President Trump’s handle to Congress, prompting a dramatic scene on the Home ground — and calls for from Republicans for additional retribution.

The vote on the decision to censure Inexperienced — which was adopted in a bipartisan vogue — featured singing, yelling and warnings that extra punishment efforts could also be on the horizon.

After the chamber accredited the decision in a 224-198-2 vote, Inexperienced offered himself within the properly of the Home so Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) might learn the censure measure aloud, the customary sequence of occasions for the formal congressional rebuke.

As Johnson started studying the decision, Inexperienced, surrounded by different Democratic lawmakers from the Congressional Black Caucus and past, began singing “We Shall Overcome,” sending the chamber into disarray.

Johnson known as for order twice, however the group continued singing. Somebody yelled, “kick ‘em out.” As soon as Johnson gaveled into recess, Democrats and Republicans began sparring.

“You’re next,” one Democratic lawmaker yelled out.

At one second, Reps. Dan Meuser (R-Pa.) and Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.) had been engaged in a tense back-and-forth.

“Al was wrong,” Meuser mentioned, prompting Pressley to reply: “Your members do the same thing.”

And Rep. Ryan Mackenzie (R-Pa.), who was noticed exchanging phrases with a number of Democrats, piped up and instructed these on the opposite facet of the aisle that they had been being embarrassing and to cease. He instructed The Hill that the Democrats began yelling again at him about Elon Musk and Trump.

Rep. Chrissy Houlahan (Pa.), considered one of 10 Democrats who voted for the censure decision, was noticed speaking with Johnson on the Home ground. She later mentioned she had a “heated conversation” with the Speaker about punishment within the Home.

“I called Speaker Johnson out on his and his party’s hypocrisy and reminded him of the many instances in which Republicans have blatantly broken the rules of conduct without consequence. He told me if he punished each instance, he’d have to censure half the House. I suggested he do just that,” Houlahan mentioned in a put up on social platform X. “Rules are rules.”

Leaving the chamber after the confrontation, Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D-Mo.) argued {that a} double-standard was being carried out. He pointed to Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) carrying a crimson cap to Trump’s handle that mentioned “Trump Was Right About Everything,” which is in violation of Home guidelines, however not dealing with penalties.

“We had two Greens, members of Congress, who violated the House rules. Only one of them was kicked out. And everybody’s trying to figure out, what is the difference?”

Whereas most Democrats balked on the censure of Inexperienced, which doesn’t carry any additional penalties, the fallout from the rebuke and the gorgeous Home ground scene is continuous as Republicans search additional punishment.

Rep. Andy Ogles (R-Tenn.) mentioned he plans to introduce resolutions to strip lawmakers who sang on the Home ground of their committee assignments, intensifying the political flames within the Capitol.

“Today, a group of House Democrats broke decorum during the censure of Rep. Al Green and, after multiple warnings, refused to heed @SpeakerJohnson’s order,” Ogles wrote on X. “I am drafting privileged resolutions to remove each of them from their committees. If you want to act like a child in the Halls of Congress, you will be treated like a child.”

The transfer to make the decision privileged means Ogles might drive Home GOP management to take motion on the measure.

Along with Ogles, the Home Freedom Caucus is crafting a decision to strip Inexperienced from his committees.

“We expect @SpeakerJohnson to bring it to the House floor for a vote next week,” Home Freedom Caucus Chair Andy Harris (R-Md.) mentioned in an announcement. “Green was censured in a bipartisan vote but he needs real consequences to demonstrate that no one gets to disrupt the People’s business in lame attempts to derail President Trump’s agenda.”

The Freedom Caucus had wished to spearhead the official censure decision in opposition to Inexperienced, but it surely was Rep. Dan Newhouse’s (R-Wash.) Al Inexperienced censure decision that gained out and was adopted by the Home.

Johnson had acknowledged a starvation for additional retribution from some GOP members forward of the vote to censure Inexperienced.

“I think this expeditious vote of censure is an appropriate remedy. Many, many of our colleagues have argued it should go even further,” Johnson instructed reporters. “But I hope that he will acknowledge his mistake, and I encourage all the Democrats to join us in this vote.”

Inexperienced mentioned after the censure that he had not had the chance to speak to Johnson, however that whereas he “was ready to undergo the implications” for his actions, he didn’t remorse his protest throughout Trump’s speech — and that whereas he accepted the censure, didn’t agree with it.

Singing “We Shall Overcome,” Inexperienced mentioned, “was a response to the president’s use of incivility to take advantage of our civility.”

“The President of the United States of America, with his incivility, called members of Congress lunatics,” Inexperienced mentioned. “Today was an act of incivility. There are times when you cannot allow yourself to be allow incivility to prevail. This was a response to the president’s incivility.”
