UNLV Coach Dan Mullen Claims National First-Year Honor in Emotional Florida Return

Gainesville, Florida – Dan Mullen, head football coach at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, received the Steve Spurrier First-Year Coach of the Year award on Monday during a special reception that highlighted his transformative impact on the Rebels program.[1][2]

A Historic Turnaround for the Rebels

Mullen guided UNLV to a 10-4 record in his inaugural 2025 season, marking the most wins ever by a first-year coach in program history.[3] The Rebels secured a share of the Mountain West Conference regular-season title, earned the top seed, and advanced to the conference championship game before competing in the Scooter’s Coffee Frisco Bowl.[4]

The campaign featured several milestones. UNLV started 6-0 for the first time since 1974, defeated every nonconference opponent for the first time since joining a league in 1982, and posted a 5-1 mark at Allegiant Stadium, the best home winning percentage there since 2000.[2] The offense proved relentless, scoring at least 20 points in every regular-season game and reaching 30 or more in a school-record 11 contests, including the first nine outings.[1]

Spurrier Hands Over the Trophy in Gainesville

The presentation took place at Steve Spurrier’s Gridiron Grille, where the College Football Hall of Famer personally awarded the trophy sponsored by Chris Doering Mortgage.[5] Spurrier praised the honoree, stating, “Dan did an excellent job at UNLV this season. He is a heck of a coach.”[1]

Mullen, who coached the Florida Gators from 2018 to 2021, savored the homecoming. “What an honor to be here,” he said. “It’s great to be back for such a wonderful occasion.”[2] Former Gators players attended, adding nostalgia to the event. Mullen also credited his team: “Any time you get an award in football, it’s really a team award. This speaks to our coaching staff and the buy-in from our players and the university and the administration and the people of Las Vegas.”[2]

From SEC Stalwart to Vegas Visionary

Mullen arrived at UNLV in December 2024 as the program’s 14th head coach after three years as an ESPN analyst.[1] His resume boasts 103 career wins across stints at Mississippi State and Florida, where he previously served as offensive coordinator.

At Florida, Mullen posted strong early results, including a 10-3 campaign with a Peach Bowl victory in 2018 and an 11-2 mark capped by an Orange Bowl win the following year. The award from the Football Writers Association of America, established in 2002 and renamed for Spurrier in 2021, now joins his accolades.[4]

Milestone Achievement for UNLV Football

Mullen became the first UNLV coach to claim the honor and only the second from the Mountain West Conference, following Boise State’s Bryan Harsin in 2014.[3] The program has seen recent FWAA recognition, with Barry Odom a finalist for another national award in 2023.

This nod signals rising momentum for Rebels football, bolstered by a top recruiting class among Group of 6 programs. Spring practice begins March 26, setting the stage for continued progress.[2]
