UNLV college students react to information following Whitfield's departure

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – Monday night marked the top of an period for UNLV President Keith Whitfield, who guided the college by means of good instances and unhealthy instances, navigating a pandemic and a lethal campus taking pictures over a 12 months in the past.

“A lot of students were confused as to why it’s coming out during the middle of the semester and why the resignation was immediate,” Dias mentioned. “I know a lot of students are a little bit confused as to what direction the university is going in.”

Avila mentioned the change comes amid quite a few trials the college has confronted, most notably, the December 2023 on-campus taking pictures that claimed the lives of three UNLV professors.

“I think with a change this big and this fast, it’s definitely going to rumble the campus a little bit,” Avila mentioned. “I think especially after everything the university has gone through, we need to see somebody at the top who is going to be leading us.”  

In the meantime, Dias mentioned his concern stays centered on UNLV college students.

“My biggest fear is probably going to be the fact that because there is a lot of restructuring going on, it’s going to take the priority away from students and focus more on restructuring the administration and moving forward, but I’m hopeful that they can get that together soon and we can go back to focusing on student needs,” Dias mentioned. 

Proper now, UNLV college students have extra questions than solutions, however campus leaders say the insurgent neighborhood stays stronger than ever.

“The biggest thing that I would want to see is our community coming together, taking the lessons that we’ve learned from President Whitfield and reshaping that into the best version of our campus we can be,” Dias mentioned. 

“UNLV is an incredible campus, and our students are always here and stronger than ever, and regardless of who’s at the top, our spirit stays the same,” Avila mentioned. 

The Nevada System of Greater Training introduced as we speak that UNLV Govt Vice President and Provost Chris L. Heavey will take over briefly and function officer in cost.
