Democratic Senate candidate Alex Vindman is now urging an immediate pause on the federal gas tax to deliver quick relief to drivers across the state.

Prices Climb and Family Budgets Feel the Strain

The current statewide average sits just 10 cents below the recent high recorded last Thursday. Even so, the figure marks a 6-cent increase from one week earlier and a 20-cent rise from a month ago. Compared with the same period last year, drivers are paying $1.48 more per gallon.

The federal gas tax, which stands at 18.4 cents per gallon, forms part of the total cost layered on top of crude oil prices and refining expenses. Vindman, a candidate for the U.S. Senate, said he has heard directly from Democrats, Independents, and Republicans about the strain on household finances. He described the proposed pause as the starting point for lowering costs for Florida families and called for immediate implementation to provide tangible help.

The candidate framed the move as a practical response to ongoing tanker disruptions rather than a long-term policy shift. Legislation to enact the federal suspension is reportedly advancing in the House, aligning with earlier comments from President Donald Trump that the government would lift the tax for a set period.

Other Leaders Weigh In on the Proposal

U.S. Sen. Rick Scott described the idea as consistent with his record of tax reductions during his time as governor. He called the pause a good step that could ease pressure without requiring new spending. Moody, another figure in the state’s political conversation, has not yet stated a position on the matter.

Support for a federal holiday appears stronger than prospects for a state-level cut. Florida’s combined state and local fuel taxes total roughly 38 cents per gallon, including a 22-cent base levy and additional fees such as the 9.9-cent State Comprehensive Enhanced Transportation System tax. A federal pause would bypass the need to navigate those layered state provisions.

DeSantis Questions the Value of Any Tax Holiday

Gov. Ron DeSantis has previously dismissed similar relief measures as marginal at best. He argued that stations often raise prices to offset the lost tax revenue, leaving consumers with little net savings. In his view, the adjustment simply shifts the cost without delivering lasting benefit to drivers.

That skepticism highlights a key tension in the current debate: whether removing the federal tax will translate into lower prices at the pump or merely maintain the status quo for retailers. The outcome will depend on how quickly market forces respond once the tax is lifted.
