5 Actors Who Went Broke When No One Expected It

Fame and a big paycheck seem like a safe combination. Hollywood history says otherwise. Some of the best-known faces on screen have run into bankruptcy filings, tax debts, or court fights over missing money.

The five cases below are well documented in public records and news coverage. Where details are disputed, I’ve said so rather than guess at the full story.

Nicolas Cage

Cage was one of the highest-paid actors of the early 2000s, and he spent like it. He bought castles, rare comics, and multiple mansions. Reports around 2009 said he owed the IRS millions in back taxes, and he sold off many properties to cover the debt.

He later said publicly that he had made poor financial decisions and blamed his own spending. He also took on a heavy load of film roles in the years that followed. His case shows that earning a fortune doesn’t mean you can keep it.

In 1989 Basinger and partners bought the town of Braselton, Georgia, hoping to develop it into a media destination. The plan never delivered the returns she hoped for. Her money troubles got worse after she backed out of a role in the film Boxing Helena, which led to a lawsuit.

A jury awarded the film’s producers about $8.1 million in 1993. She filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection that same year. A later settlement reduced the amount she owed, and her career recovered, including an Oscar win for L.A. Confidential in 1998.

Reynolds was one of the biggest box office draws of the 1970s and early 1980s. By the mid 1990s he was in financial trouble. He filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 1996, with millions of dollars in debts on record.

Business investments that went badly and an expensive divorce are commonly cited as causes. He rebuilt his career with Boogie Nights in 1997, which earned him an Oscar nomination. Even so, his money problems stayed in the news for years afterward.

Wesley Snipes

Snipes was a major action star in the 1990s with films like Blade and Passenger 57. His troubles with the government were tax related. In 2008 he was convicted of three misdemeanor counts of failing to file federal tax returns, and he received a three year prison sentence.

The case brought heavy scrutiny of his finances and left him facing large tax obligations. After his release, he returned to acting and appeared in projects like Coming 2 America. The case is a reminder that unpaid taxes can cost an actor more than money.

Gary Coleman

Kevin Spacey’s career collapsed in 2017 when a wave of misconduct allegations led to his firing from House of Cards and the removal of his scenes from All the Money in the World. Although he was later cleared in court, years of legal battles and a $31 million payout to the House of Cards producers left him broke, and in 2025 he admitted he no longer had a home of his own. Now in his late 60s, he has settled his remaining lawsuits and is quietly rebuilding his career abroad through indie films and festival appearances.

Money in Hollywood can disappear as fast as it arrives. Every one of these actors proved that a career can survive a financial crash, but only if the person is willing to start over.
