1. Will Smith walked away from Neo in The Matrix
When the Wachowskis approached Will Smith about playing Neo, he was fresh off Independence Day and Men in Black, two of the biggest sci-fi hits of the decade. Having just starred in two major science fiction movies, he felt uneasy about jumping into yet another sci-fi project, worrying he’d be typecast. On top of that, he struggled to see what the Wachowskis were actually building with their pitch.
He chose Wild Wild West instead, a decision that caused him to turn down the role of Neo in The Matrix, which went on to become one of the most top rated and critically acclaimed film franchises of all times. Smith has since described both that pass and a later decision to skip Inception as two of the moments that still bother him most in his career. He’s also been generous about the outcome, acknowledging that Keanu was perfect, and Laurence Fishburne was perfect in the roles that actually got made.
2. Tom Selleck lost Indiana Jones to a TV contract
Selleck didn’t just audition for Indiana Jones, he was told he had it. The actor went through wardrobe fittings and screen tests, and it seemed like a done deal, before he was ultimately forced to turn down the role due to a contractual obligation with Magnum, P.I., which had just started production. CBS had picked up his pilot and simply refused to let Spielberg and Lucas borrow him for the shoot.
Publicly, Selleck has spent years insisting the whole thing worked out fine, pointing out that signing on for Magnum turned into the best professional break he ever got. But his Raiders co-star Karen Allen told a different version of the story years later, revealing that she met up with Selleck quite a bit later, and he revealed how upset he was, telling her how heartbroken he was. That gap between the composed public answer and the private one is what makes this particular near miss so memorable.
3. Sean Connery passed on Gandalf and a fortune along with it
Peter Jackson’s team wanted Connery badly enough to offer him a deal reportedly worth tens of millions of dollars plus a slice of box office profits. They made an offer to Connery, but he said no, and it later turned out he had read the material and just didn’t get it. He would later admit that even watching the finished trilogy didn’t clear things up for him.
Connery has always framed the decision as a simple case of not connecting with the story rather than a mistake he regrets. Still, the numbers involved are hard to ignore, with one industry estimate suggesting he missed out on roughly $450 million, including a sizeable stake in the franchise’s box-office draw when he passed on playing Gandalf. He remained gracious about it afterward, calling Ian McKellen’s performance in the role marvelous.
4. John Travolta chose Pulp Fiction over Forrest Gump
Travolta was an early choice to play Forrest Gump, but he opted for Pulp Fiction instead, a film that ended up resurrecting his career after a rough early nineties stretch. Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction became the movie that resurrected Travolta’s career, turning him from a relic of the disco era into one of the most in demand stars of the 1990s. At the time, it looked like an easy win.
Then came the 1995 Oscars, where the two movies ended up going head to head in the awards season, with Forrest Gump largely coming out on top, winning Best Picture and Best Director, while Hanks and Travolta were also both nominated for Best Actor, with Hanks ultimately securing the win. Travolta has mostly stuck to the line that he doesn’t regret it, since skipping one great role usually meant landing another. Even so, he has also admitted in hindsight that saying no to Forrest Gump was a tremendous mistake, a contradiction that tells you how huge this role really was.
5. Emily Blunt gave up Black Widow for a film nobody remembers fondly
Jon Favreau wanted Blunt to play Natasha Romanoff in Iron Man 2 before Scarlett Johansson ever entered the picture. The problem was a prior studio obligation, since the Devil Wears Prada actress turned down the part of the future Avenger in Iron Man 2 because of scheduling conflicts and a contractual agreement with 20th Century Fox, which had her star alongside Jack Black in Gulliver’s Travels. There was no getting out of it.
Blunt has been candid about how much that stung at the time, admitting it was a bit of a heartbreaker for her, because she takes such pride in the decisions and the films she does, adding that she loved Iron Man and was obsessed with it when she got the Black Widow offer. Johansson went on to play the character for well over a decade across multiple Marvel films, while the movie Blunt made instead barely registered with audiences. It’s the kind of trade that looks worse with every passing year of Marvel’s box office dominance.
6. Michelle Pfeiffer stepped away from The Silence of the Lambs
Before Jodie Foster ever walked onto the set as Clarice Starling, the script made the rounds among several leading actresses of the era, including Michelle Pfeiffer. According to long standing film history accounts, she was uneasy about spending months inside such dark material, a film built entirely around a serial killer investigation. Given where her career sat at the time, leaning toward warmer, more mainstream dramas, the reluctance made sense in the moment.
Foster took the part instead and won the Academy Award for Best Actress, while the film became one of only a handful of movies to sweep the major Oscar categories. Pfeiffer has rarely discussed the decision at length in public, which is part of why the story lingers the way it does. It remains one of the most cited casting what-ifs in film history, not because of anything she has said, but because of how completely the finished film outperformed anyone’s expectations at the time.
