Hollywood has always drawn talent from north of the border, and many of those performers blend in so well that audiences never think twice. They play American cops, teenagers, superheroes and presidents without a trace of an accent slipping through. Some have even lived in the United States for decades.
Still, their birth certificates tell a different story. Here are nine well known actors who were born in Canada, along with a few career moments that keep them in the spotlight.
Ryan Reynolds

Ryan Reynolds was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, in 1976. He got his start on Canadian television before moving into American films and eventually became one of the most recognizable comic leads in Hollywood. Many viewers still picture him as a quintessential Los Angeles fixture.
His run as Deadpool is the role most people connect with him, and it reached a new peak with Deadpool & Wolverine in 2024. Off screen, he is also known for co-owning the Welsh football club Wrexham with fellow actor Rob McElhenney. The club’s story became a documentary series, which pushed him even further into the mainstream.
Rachel McAdams

Rachel McAdams comes from London, Ontario, where she was born in 1978. She studied theatre in Canada before her breakthrough in the early 2000s. It’s easy to assume she’s a Hollywood native given how firmly she defined American teen and romance films.
Mean Girls and The Notebook made her a household name, yet she later showed a more serious side. She earned an Oscar nomination for her supporting work in Spotlight. In 2023 she took on the lead in Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret, a warm coming of age adaptation.
Ryan Gosling

Ryan Gosling was also born in London, Ontario, in 1980, and he grew up in the Ontario area before finding fame as a child performer. Later he became a leading man in American dramas, musicals and action films. Most casual viewers would probably guess he’s from California.
His turn as Ken in Barbie in 2023 brought him another Oscar nomination, this time for supporting actor. He followed that with The Fall Guy in 2024, a stunt filled action comedy that leaned on his easy charm. The range he’s shown keeps him among the most versatile actors from Canada.
Jim Carrey

Jim Carrey was born in Newmarket, Ontario, in 1962. He began doing stand up as a teenager in Toronto before heading south to chase a bigger career. His rubber faced physical comedy became so associated with American pop culture that his Canadian roots often get overlooked.
Ace Ventura, The Mask and The Truman Show turned him into a global star. In late 2024 he returned to screens in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, once again playing the villain Dr. Robotnik. He later became a United States citizen while keeping his Canadian citizenship.

Michael J. Fox

Michael J. Fox was born in Edmonton, Alberta, in 1961. His portrayal of Marty McFly in Back to the Future is so tied to small town American teenage life that few people think of him as Canadian. He also starred in the sitcom Family Ties, which cemented his place in American living rooms.
He was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1991 and later founded a foundation devoted to research for a cure. In 2022 the film academy honored him with a humanitarian award at its Governors Awards. The 2023 documentary Still told his story in his own words.
Sandra Oh

Sandra Oh was born in Nepean, Ontario, which is now part of Ottawa, in 1971. She trained at the National Theatre School of Canada before building an international career. For many viewers, her long stretch on American television made her feel like a homegrown star.
Grey’s Anatomy gave her a huge audience, and she played Dr. Cristina Yang for ten seasons. She then took the lead in Killing Eve, which earned her major award nominations. Her more recent work includes The Chair and the film Umma.
Seth Rogen

Seth Rogen was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, in 1982. He began performing stand up as a teenager and got his big break on Freaks and Geeks. His laid back, distinctly stoner comedy persona reads as classic American to plenty of fans.
Superbad, Knocked Up and Pineapple Express helped define a generation of comedies. In 2025 he co-created and starred in The Studio on Apple TV+, a satire of the film business. The series was a big winner at that year’s Emmy Awards, and it gave him a fresh wave of critical praise.
Mike Myers

Mike Myers was born in Scarborough, Ontario, in 1963. He joined Saturday Night Live in the late 1980s and quickly became one of its breakout personalities. Plenty of viewers assume a comedian with such a strong American television pedigree must have grown up there.
Wayne’s World and the Austin Powers films made him a star in the 1990s. He also voiced Shrek, one of the most successful animated characters ever created. Shrek’s Scottish accent is a fun bit of trivia, considering the actor behind it is a proud Canadian.
Pamela Anderson

Pamela Anderson was born in Ladysmith, British Columbia, in 1967. She rose to fame in the 1990s with Baywatch, a show so tied to California beaches that her Canadian upbringing rarely came up. For years, her public image was shaped almost entirely by American tabloids and television.
Recently, she has reshaped how people see her as an actor. Her performance in The Last Showgirl in 2024 earned her a Golden Globe nomination and plenty of critical attention. It marked a serious turn that surprised many viewers who thought they already knew her story.
