Venice – The most visited exhibitions at the Venice Biennale were closed on Friday after artists launched a strike in support of a pro-Palestinian demonstration. The move affected several high-profile pavilions that typically draw large crowds to the international art event. Organizers now face additional pressure as the closures compound existing difficulties at the biennale.

Scope of the Closures

The strike targeted the hottest exhibitions on display, leaving them shuttered for the day. Visitors arriving at the affected pavilions encountered locked entrances and limited access to the works inside. This sudden halt disrupted scheduled viewings and tours that had been planned well in advance.

Reason for the Action

Artists coordinated the demonstration to highlight their stance on the Palestinian issue. The protest took the form of a coordinated work stoppage rather than a traditional march or rally. By closing the pavilions, participants ensured the action received immediate attention from both attendees and the wider art community.

Added Strain on the Event

The shutdowns have intensified the sense of upheaval already surrounding this edition of the biennale. Staff and curators must now manage the fallout while attempting to keep other sections of the exhibition running smoothly. The episode illustrates how political concerns can quickly intersect with major cultural gatherings and alter their daily operations.
