Edgewater – A shooting unfolded in broad daylight Thursday morning on the 1400 block of West Thome Avenue, leaving one man dead and another fighting for his life. Police arrived at 7:19 a.m. after reports of gunfire and discovered two men on the ground with gunshot wounds. The 53-year-old victim was rushed to St. Francis Hospital in critical condition, while the second man died at the scene.

Investigators are now working to determine whether one man shot the other before turning the weapon on himself. The incident marks the second shooting in the neighborhood this year and has raised fresh questions about public safety in the area.

Response at the Scene

Officers secured the area quickly after the initial call. They recovered a firearm at the location and later found a second weapon along with four ammunition magazines on the injured man when he reached the hospital. Preliminary reports indicate the weapons may have belonged to one of the individuals involved.

Detectives from the area are leading the investigation and have spoken with at least one witness who described the sequence of events. No other suspects are being sought at this time, though the full circumstances remain under review.

Previous Incident Adds Context

This shooting follows another in Edgewater on April 25, when a 46-year-old man was wounded by at least two gunmen near the 5200 block of North Broadway. That attack occurred late at night, and authorities have not determined whether the victim was the intended target.

Thursday’s event stands out because it took place in daylight and involved only two individuals. Police continue to piece together how the two men knew each other and what led to the confrontation.

What Matters Now

Authorities have not released the names of either man pending further confirmation and notification of family. The focus now rests on completing the inquiry and determining what steps, if any, could help prevent similar tragedies in the neighborhood.
