Campaign season in Nevada has brought the usual flood of television ads, mailers and social media posts. Candidates trade accusations and promises while voters sort through the noise. One topic remains largely absent from the conversation: the rapid expansion of data centers across the state.

Expansion Pressures Mount in a Dry State

Nevada already hosts several large data center projects, with more under development in both urban and rural areas. These facilities require substantial amounts of electricity and water to operate cooling systems. The state’s major utility has publicly stated it lacks sufficient capacity to meet the projected demand from projects now moving forward.

Rural electric cooperatives continue to receive proposals from developers promising jobs and tax revenue. Local officials in some communities have approved incentives, including millions of dollars in tax abatements. Questions persist about whether developers have fully disclosed the scale of those breaks or the long-term resource demands.

Gallup Poll Highlights Widespread Public Concern

A recent Gallup poll found that 71 percent of Americans oppose having artificial intelligence data centers in their communities. That level of resistance exceeds opposition to nuclear power plants in the same survey. The findings reflect growing awareness of the infrastructure strain these facilities can create.

In Nevada the issue carries added weight because of the state’s limited water supplies and reliance on the Colorado River and Sierra Nevada snowpack. Data centers tied to AI training and cloud services add to the load on an already stressed power grid. Small modular nuclear reactors have been discussed as a possible solution, yet that option revives memories of past nuclear controversies in the state.

Officials Emphasize Growth While Voters Wait for Answers

Governor Joe Lombardo has voiced support for data center development in campaign materials. He points to requirements for water recycling systems and assurances that infrastructure costs will not fall on individual ratepayers. The governor has described the projects as contributors to business expansion, job creation and economic resilience.

Critics note that construction phases generate temporary employment, while permanent staffing at data centers tends to remain low. Environmental goals and questions about actual water consumption figures have received less attention in public statements. After public pushback, the Reno City Council recently approved a temporary moratorium to study the impacts in greater detail.

Long-Term Choices for Nevada’s Economy

Supporters argue that data centers strengthen the tax base and attract related technology investment. Skeptics counter that the state could pursue higher-value industries, such as semiconductor manufacturing, that create more sustained employment without the same resource footprint. Voters and local governments now face decisions that will shape energy use and water availability for years ahead.

Candidates have an opportunity to address these trade-offs directly before Election Day. Clear positions on permitting standards, resource protections and economic priorities would give residents a better basis for evaluating the projects already underway.
