What’s genuinely interesting about this particular group of actors isn’t that they failed. Most of them didn’t. Being remembered as a single character in a single project can undoubtedly be a challenge to parlay into a successful, long-term career, yet actors who had just one big role often hold a special place in our collective heart. These are the ten performers whose stars burned brightest, then dimmed, and why that happened still makes for a compelling story.
George Lazenby: The Bond Who Walked Away
George Lazenby had no film acting experience when he was cast as the fictional British spy James Bond for the film “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service” in 1969. It was one of the most audacious casting decisions in cinema history. In 1968, after Sean Connery left the role, producer Albert R. Broccoli met Lazenby while getting their hair cut at the same barbershop, later saw him in a chocolate commercial, and felt he could possibly portray Bond.
Prior to the release of “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service,” Lazenby decided to leave the role after his agent, Ronan O’Rahilly, convinced him that the secret agent would be archaic in the liberated 1970s. The gamble failed spectacularly. Lazenby refused to play Bond again thanks to bad career advice, leaving him to languish in relative obscurity for much of the 1970s before resurfacing as a supporting player in several television series and made-for-TV movies. Lazenby had the shortest tenure as the world’s most well-known secret agent, starring only in the one film as 007.
Edward Furlong: A Prodigy Derailed
Furlong hadn’t acted in a film before playing John Connor in “Terminator 2: Judgment Day,” then popped up as a major character in a huge hit movie sequel. His debut was virtually flawless, the kind of performance that made studios reach for their chequebooks. His natural talent and authentic portrayal of the rebellious teenager earned him critical acclaim and an MTV Movie Award for Best Breakthrough Performance.
Furlong’s promising career soon derailed due to serious substance abuse issues and legal troubles that began in his teens, and by the early 2000s, his once-bright star had significantly dimmed as he faced multiple arrests. Now in his mid-40s, he occasionally appears at fan conventions and has expressed hope about rebuilding his career, though he remains largely removed from mainstream Hollywood.
Linda Blair: Possessed by One Role
Linda Blair peaked early as a legendary scream queen. At 14 years old, she played the demonically possessed Regan MacNeil with a mix of terrified innocence and terrifying evil, and “The Exorcist” was a shocking success which revolutionized horror cinema. With an Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe win, Blair was expected to be a big name at a young age.
Linda quickly rose to international fame and seemed set to take the Academy Award for that role, but when it leaked that some parts of the role were not performed by her, that dream broke, and with it came the first blow to what looked like the beginning of an A-list career. After that, she mostly found herself acting in B-movies and exploitation flicks. She remained a cult figure rather than the mainstream force Hollywood once imagined.
Alicia Silverstone: Clueless About What Came Next
As Cher in the 1995 film “Clueless,” Alicia Silverstone became an overnight sensation. While no one can take away her permanent place in pop culture, Silverstone struggled to find another success on par with “Clueless.” The film gave her a level of cultural saturation that most actors spend entire careers chasing. Silverstone is often seen as a one-hit-wonder actress due to her iconic role as Cher in “Clueless,” which became a cultural phenomenon, and despite early promise and a few high-profile roles afterward, she never replicated the same level of success in Hollywood.
She didn’t stop working after her most popular role, but her experience in Hollywood left her feeling somewhat disillusioned. The years immediately after “Clueless” brought a string of projects that simply didn’t stick. Only in the past few years has her career started to pick up speed again.
Nikki Blonsky: The Hairspray Hurricane
Plucked from obscurity, high school senior Nikki Blonsky went from scooping ice cream to starring opposite John Travolta in the blockbuster Hollywood musical “Hairspray” in 2007 in the blink of an eye. She auditioned for the role as a high-school student with no professional acting or singing background at the time, and beat out more than 1,100 candidates. The film earned her a Golden Globe nomination and two Critics’ Choice Awards.
Despite how critical Blonsky was to the success of the film, she never ended up reaching the same heights of stardom. She had roles on TV shows like Ugly Betty, Smash, and Fresh Off The Boat, but nothing that matched the magnitude of “Hairspray,” and her most recent role was on the Peacock show Bosco in 2025. Blonsky saw a resurgence in 2025 following a TikTok trend of her Cameo appearances.
Peter Ostrum: Charlie Bucket’s One-Way Ticket
Adapted from Roald Dahl’s novel “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” introduced audiences to the ever-lovable Charlie Bucket, and actor Peter Ostrum was scouted by agents during his time at the Cleveland Play House children’s theater. It was a fairy-tale discovery in every sense. His performance opposite Gene Wilder became one of cinema’s most treasured pairings.
Peter Ostrum decided to change careers after portraying Charlie Bucket in “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.” Since Bucket was the protagonist, Ostrum had to share the screen with Gene Wilder, and after this Hollywood hit, Ostrum decided to become a veterinarian. After playing Charlie Bucket in the iconic 1971 Roald Dahl adaptation, Peter’s interests turned to animals and he decided to become a vet instead of continuing acting. It’s a rare story with a genuinely happy ending.
Carrie Henn: Newt, Then Normal Life
Carrie Henn’s performance as the traumatized orphan Newt in James Cameron’s “Aliens” remains one of cinema’s most memorable child roles. Her authentic portrayal of fear and resilience earned her a Saturn Award and created an unforgettable dynamic with Sigourney Weaver’s Ellen Ripley. Yet despite her natural talent and recognition, Henn never appeared in another feature film, making her a true one-role wonder in Hollywood history.
Unlike many others on this list, Henn’s disappearance from Hollywood was entirely deliberate. After “Aliens,” she returned to a normal childhood and pursued education rather than acting, eventually earning a teaching degree and building a career as an elementary school teacher in California. Now in her late 40s, she occasionally appears at science fiction conventions to meet fans but has expressed no regrets about choosing education over Hollywood.
Nia Vardalos: One Big Fat Greek Exit
Nia Vardalos was struggling as a small-time TV actress when she took a chance on a career shift, drawing on her cultural heritage as writer and star of the one-woman show “My Big Fat Greek Wedding,” later expanded into a romantic comedy movie. The humble production was a huge hit with critics and audiences, earning Vardalos Oscar and Golden Globe nominations for her two roles.
She continued Toula Portokalos’s family-sized love story in two sequels and a short-lived TV show on CBS, though outside of the franchise, Vardalos has stuck to smaller projects. The original film remains one of the highest-grossing romantic comedies ever made relative to its budget, which makes the absence of a follow-up hit even more remarkable. A single movie defined her entire public identity.
Patrick Fugit: Almost Famous, Always Almost
Cameron Crowe’s experiences as a teenage rock journalist inspired his road dramedy masterpiece “Almost Famous,” and of all the actors who could have played his surrogate character, the role of William Miller went to 16-year-old Patrick Fugit. His bashful charm and emotional maturity carried the coming-of-age story against the egos of 1970s rockers.
Despite commercial disappointment, “Almost Famous” won a dedicated following, though sadly they did not follow Fugit. He has had supporting roles in “Cirque du Freak,” “Gone Girl,” and “First Man,” and helmed Cinemax’s acclaimed horror drama “Outcast,” yet Fugit may be famous for rarely getting to be the headliner. The film is now considered a masterpiece. Fugit remains a respected working actor, just not a name that sells tickets.
Lacey Chabert: Mean Girls and the Hallmark Pivot
Gretchen Wieners in “Mean Girls” was one of the standout characters in that beloved 2004 comedy, and the actress who played her, Lacey Chabert, was a child actor with a long list of credits before scoring her biggest role in the high school comedy penned by Tina Fey. The film became a cultural institution, and Chabert’s performance as the gossipy, quote-generating Gretchen was a significant part of why.
While she has made a name for herself elsewhere with voice acting and leading several Hallmark Channel originals, the gossipy plastic is still the singular defining moment of her career. More recently, Chabert has focused almost exclusively on Hallmark Channel movies, and she seems to be their resident star, headlining several of their televised films over the years, a role she’s seemingly happy with.
