The 7 U.S. Cities That Appear Most Often in Hit Songs

Pop music has always had a thing for place names. A city can set a mood in one word, and songwriters have been using that shortcut for decades. Some cities show up so often that they’ve become a kind of shared vocabulary.

Counting those mentions is harder than it sounds, and different studies get different answers. One widely cited analysis looked at lyrics from more than 200,000 songs that reached the top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100 and the UK singles chart since 1960. It found more than 2,000 songs by 897 artists mentioning 422 different places. The ranking below leans on that dataset, with other counts added where they help.

No other American city comes close. New York was named in the lyrics of 161 charting singles in the Celebrity Cruises analysis. Los Angeles, the next U.S. city, sat at roughly half that total.

A separate Spotify based count points the same way. Across 1 million songs, New York was named 1,374 times. Different methods, different catalogs, same winner.

Los Angeles appeared in 87 charting songs in that same study. That’s a sizable lead over every other West Coast name on the list. It also doesn’t count the many songs that skip the city and go straight to California or Hollywood.

Those neighbors pile up on their own. California turned up in 68 songs and Hollywood in 66. If you lump the whole region’s imagery together, Southern California is arguably the biggest lyrical landscape in American pop.

Miami: Nightlife as a Lyric Shortcut

Miami takes third among U.S. cities in the charting singles count. It was mentioned in 46 songs. That’s a strong showing for a city far smaller than New York or Los Angeles.

Streaming era data backs up its pull. A Spotify based table of mentions lists Miami at 264, placing it among the most sung about spots worldwide. Beaches, clubs and heat make it an easy setting for party tracks, which probably helps.

New Orleans: A Music City Hiding in Plain Sight

New Orleans is a smaller city that punches well above its weight. It showed up in 43 charting songs, just behind Miami. Few places have a stronger claim to being the birthplace of American music styles, so the attention isn’t random.

The city’s name carries a lot of baggage, in a good way. Jazz, brass bands and Mardi Gras all come bundled in a single mention. A songwriter gets an entire atmosphere for two words.

San Francisco: The Romantic Outlier

San Francisco appeared in 28 charting songs, which puts it level with Memphis in that dataset. It’s a modest number next to New York, yet it holds up against much larger metro areas. Its hills, bay and bridge give lyricists plenty of postcard material.

Other, less strict counts rank it even higher. One list of city mentions in lyrics puts San Francisco at 1,086 mentions. That list is a secondary source with an unclear method, so it’s best treated as a rough guide.

Memphis: Small City, Huge Song Catalog

In the top 40 study, Memphis was named in 28 songs. That sounds modest until you widen the lens to all commercial recordings. A crowd sourced list on Wikipedia describes it as the most mentioned city in the world in commercially recorded songs, though that claim comes from a user maintained tally.

The gap between the two results makes sense. Memphis shows up constantly in blues, soul, rock and country, but not always in the biggest chart hits. Beale Street and Sun Studio feed a deep catalog that charts don’t fully capture.

Chicago: Steady and Underrated

Chicago rounds out the list. It appeared in 24 charting songs in the Celebrity Cruises count. Atlanta and Detroit sit just behind it at 23 each.

Streaming data gives Chicago a better showing. A Spotify based ranking lists it with 397 mentions, well above the average for places in that dataset. Blues, house and a wave of recent hip hop have all kept the city in lyrics.

The rankings shift depending on the dataset, but New York leads in every one cited here. Los Angeles, Miami, New Orleans, San Francisco, Memphis and Chicago follow in the charting singles count. The most recent of these studies are several years old, so newer hits may have nudged the totals.
