Las Vegas police don’t 'implement immigration violations,' coverage says

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Division doesn’t “enforce immigration violations,” the division posted on X in response to eight Information Now’s interview Monday with Sheriff Kevin McMahill.

In that report, McMahill stated his division is not going to partake in mass deportation “roundups” as President Donald Trump lays out his immigration insurance policies. Trump has promised to deport hundreds of thousands of undocumented immigrants, saying throughout his inaugural deal with Monday: “We will begin the process of returning millions and millions of criminal aliens back to the places from which they came.”

Trump’s new self-described border czar beforehand stated he would use U.S. Immigration and Prospects Enforcement to “run the biggest deportation operation this country’s ever seen.”

“Although Nevada peace officers have the authority to assist in enforcing federal laws, LVMPD officers will not enforce immigration violations,” the coverage dated October 2019 and up to date in March 2023 stated. “Officers will not stop and question, detain, arrest, or place an immigration hold on any individuals on the ground they are an undocumented immigrant. However, LVMPD will share criminal intelligence regarding transnational organized crime and international terrorists with any and all law enforcement agencies to include ICE.”

“I think it will be an interesting conversation, but roundups out in the community and those kinds of things, that’s not my job. I have too much to do,” McMahill informed 8 Information Now. “I don’t think that with the volume and magnitude of the problem that they’re going to make as much progress on it as they would like to unless they first focus in on stopping people from coming across the borders.”
