Las Vegas – The Golden Knights placed captain Mark Stone on injured reserve Thursday due to an upper-body injury, confirming his absence for the team’s next two home contests.[1][2]

Moment of Impact in Pittsburgh

Stone sustained the injury during a 5-0 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Sunday. Late in the first period, Penguins defenseman Kris Letang delivered a light check to Stone’s left arm in the neutral zone.[1] The 33-year-old forward grimaced, dropped to one knee, and did not return to the game.

Head coach Bruce Cassidy addressed the situation afterward. He noted that medical staff examined Stone and described the issue as upper-body, with more details expected soon.[3] Stone had already sat out the subsequent games against the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday and the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday.[1]

A Star Disrupted Mid-Stride

Stone entered the Pittsburgh matchup on pace for a career-best season. He tallied 60 points, including 21 goals and 39 assists, across 43 games.[2] That production projected to 114 points over a full 82-game schedule.

This marks his second trip to injured reserve this year. Stone previously missed 16 games from October 18 to November 26 after breaking a finger.[1] He also represented Team Canada at the Olympic Winter Games in Milano Cortina 2026, contributing four points in six games en route to a silver medal.[2]

  • 21 goals, leading the team’s scoring chart
  • 39 assists, showcasing elite playmaking
  • 60 total points in limited action
  • Prior finger injury sidelined him for over three weeks
  • Olympic silver with Canada

Testing Depth in the Pacific Race

The Golden Knights hold a one-point lead over the Anaheim Ducks atop the Pacific Division with 20 games remaining. Stone’s absence adds pressure as the team navigates a tight playoff push.[1]

Other injuries compound the challenge. Forward Alex Holtz deals with an upper-body issue since February 27, while Jonas Rondbjerg remains week-to-week with an undisclosed problem.[4] Brett Howden and William Karlsson also linger on the shelf with lower-body ailments.

The roster move to place Stone on IR freed a spot. Vegas acquired center Nic Dowd from Washington in exchange for goaltending prospect Jesper Vikman and two draft picks.[1]

Home Stand Looms Large

Stone must sit out at least seven days under IR rules, covering Friday’s matchup against the Minnesota Wild and Sunday’s tilt with the Edmonton Oilers. Both games occur at T-Mobile Arena.[2]

Vegas recalled winger Raphael Lavoie from AHL affiliate Henderson earlier this week to fill gaps. Rookie Braeden Bowman stepped into Stone’s role on the top line and power play during recent outings.[1]

Key Takeaways

  • Stone’s IR stint ensures at least four straight games missed, starting from Pittsburgh.
  • His 60 points highlight his irreplaceable offensive spark.
  • Roster tweaks, including Dowd’s arrival, aim to stabilize the lineup.

The Golden Knights demonstrated resilience without Stone before, but his leadership and scoring prove vital down the stretch. As Vegas eyes the postseason, depth players face a defining moment. What do you think about the team’s chances without their captain? Tell us in the comments.
