Memphis, Tennessee — A heated argument over unpaid rent escalated into a shooting that left one man critically injured and his roommate in custody. Authorities charged 22-year-old Lorenzo Miller with multiple felonies following the Friday incident at an apartment on the 2100 block of Parkhurst Court. Police described a chaotic scene where Miller allegedly blocked the door and unleashed at least six bullets from a black Taurus 9mm handgun.

Dispute Ignites Over Shared Rent

The confrontation began inside the apartment where Miller lived with his girlfriend and the victim, his roommate. Tensions boiled over when Miller raised the issue of the roommate failing to pay his share of the rent. According to a court affidavit, the girlfriend witnessed the exchange turn physical as voices rose.

Miller reportedly entered the roommate’s bedroom during the argument and retrieved the handgun. Court documents noted the weapon sat on a nearby coffee table, easily accessible amid the rising conflict. The roommate attempted to leave, but Miller positioned himself at the door, gun in hand, refusing to let him pass.

Violence Erupts in Close Quarters

As the argument intensified, the roommate struck Miller in the face while the gun pointed at him. Miller responded by firing the first shots: one into the stomach and two into the shoulder. The victim fought back briefly before Miller shot him once in the leg.

The roommate collapsed to the floor, but the assault continued. Authorities stated Miller stood over him and fired at least two more rounds. The entire sequence unfolded rapidly in the confined space of the apartment, leaving the victim with multiple gunshot wounds.

Officers Arrive to Chaotic Aftermath

Memphis Police Department officers reached the scene shortly after and discovered the victim with at least six gunshot wounds. Paramedics transported him to a nearby hospital in critical condition. Miller remained nearby in the apartment building’s breezeway, where police took him into custody without further incident.

Investigators quickly located the black Taurus 9mm handgun outside the apartment near a fence line. The weapon matched the description provided by witnesses. Officers secured the area and began interviewing those present to piece together the timeline.

Key Evidence Builds the Case

Miller’s girlfriend identified him to police as the shooter responsible for the attack. She recounted the argument’s progression and the retrieval of the gun. Her account aligned with physical evidence at the scene.

During questioning, Miller admitted to the shooting, claiming the roommate assaulted him first. The following day, the victim, recovering in the hospital, selected Miller from a six-person photo lineup as his attacker and roommate. These identifications strengthened the prosecution’s position.

  • Attempted first-degree murder
  • Employing a firearm with intent to commit a felony
  • Tampering with or fabricating evidence
  • Especially aggravated kidnapping

Court Date Looms Amid Serious Charges

Prosecutors filed the charges based on the affidavit detailing the incident. The especially aggravated kidnapping count stemmed from Miller blocking the door and preventing escape. Tampering allegations arose from actions potentially linked to hiding or altering evidence post-shooting.

Miller faced an initial court appearance on Tuesday. The victim’s condition remained a focal point, with his survival underscoring the attempted murder charge. This case highlights how everyday financial strains can spiral into life-threatening violence, leaving communities to grapple with the consequences.
