The 6 Most Walked-Out-On Concerts in Music History

Not every show ends with an encore and a standing ovation. Sometimes the house lights come up early, security starts clearing rows, and thousands of people head for the parking lot before the final song ever gets played. These are the nights that fans still talk about decades later, not for the music, but for the exodus.

Fifteen songs into their set at Riverport Amphitheatre, Axl Rose spotted a fan filming him from the crowd and demanded security intervene. Axl Rose spotted someone taking pictures from the audience and instructed security to put a stop to it, yelling “Get that guy!” before leaping into the audience himself. When he climbed back on stage, he was done.

Rose yelled, “thanks to the lame-ass security, I’m going home,” dropped the mic and walked offstage. The band followed him out mid-song, and the crowd did not take it well. A riot ensued, injuring dozens of fans, and GN’R was banned from playing St. Louis while Rose was charged with four counts of misdemeanor assault. Damage to the venue ran into the hundreds of thousands of dollars, and the band did not return to the city for over two decades.

A co-headlining stadium tour with two of the biggest rock bands on the planet should have been a slam dunk. Instead, an injury to Metallica’s James Hetfield during pyrotechnics forced an early end to their set, and fans were left waiting for Guns N’ Roses to fill the gap.

When GN’R finally took the stage, Axl Rose lasted only a handful of songs before storming off over sound issues, taking the rest of the band with him. Outraged concertgoers rioted, with an estimated 10,000 people looting and starting bonfires, and even overturning police cars. What began as a walkout from the crowd’s side turned into one of the most destructive concert aftermaths of the decade.

Not every walkout is the band’s fault, and not every crowd waits patiently to express its displeasure. During a 2002 show in Portugal, Nickelback found themselves on the receiving end of flying debris almost from the moment they hit the stage.

The band cut the gig short after being pelted by flying objects, and Chad Kroeger was immediately hit in the head with a rock, forcing the group to end their set after less than two songs. Fans who had paid for a full concert left the venue within minutes of arriving, making it one of the shortest headline sets on record and a strange footnote in the band’s touring history.

Guns N’ Roses shows up again on this list because Axl Rose’s temperament became something of a running theme through the 1990s and 2000s. During one Irish date, an outburst from the frontman sent a huge chunk of the audience streaming toward the exits before the set was even finished.

During one show in Ireland, about two-thirds of the crowd left after an Axl outburst, and those fans were actually refused refunds after the fact. The refusal to compensate ticket holders only deepened the frustration, turning what could have been a forgettable bad night into a story that followed the band for years.

Sometimes a walkout has nothing to do with attitude and everything to do with illness. In January 2015, Roger Daltrey left the stage during the very first song of a Tampa show, unable to continue.

Several minutes after Daltrey’s departure, Pete Townshend announced the show was canceled, telling the crowd he had just talked to Roger and “he can barely speak.” Nine thousand fans filed out of the amphitheater that night having heard barely a minute of music, though the show was rescheduled and most ticket holders got a second chance to see the band later that spring.

Few walkouts are as chaotic as the one triggered by Puddle of Mudd frontman Wes Scantlin in Ohio. Just four songs into the set, his own bandmates decided they had seen enough and left him alone on stage.

His bandmates walked out on him just four songs into their set after he was so intoxicated, and despite being in no condition to perform, Scantlin remained onstage for about 30 minutes, apparently making up his own songs on the fly. Fans trickled out well before he finally gave up, and police were waiting for him when he reached his dressing room.

What ties these six nights together is not bad luck so much as a breakdown in trust between the people on stage and the people who paid to be in the crowd. Security failures, frontman tempers, illness, and plain hostility all played a role, but in each case the audience made the same decision: leave now rather than wait for something that clearly was not coming.

Live music remains, at its core, a promise between performer and listener. When that promise breaks, whether through a punch thrown into a crowd or a set cut short after two songs, the walkout becomes the story people remember far longer than any setlist ever could.
