The 9 Most-Covered Songs in Recorded Music History

Counting cover versions sounds simple until you try it. Databases like SecondHandSongs rely on contributions from an active community, so their totals shift over time. Guinness World Records, BMI and fan-built lists don’t always agree either.

Contents
1. “Silent Night”2. “Yesterday”3. “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction”4. “Love Me Tender”5. “Eleanor Rigby”6. “My Way”7. “Bridge Over Troubled Water”8. “Ain’t No Sunshine”9. “Hallelujah”

The rankings below follow the songs that keep turning up at the top of those lists. Where the numbers differ, the differences are noted.

1. “Silent Night”

As of 2025, SecondHandSongs lists “Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht,” written by Joseph Mohr and Franz Gruber in 1818, as its most covered composition, with 4,229 covers. That makes it the biggest total in this article, though that database counts a century of choirs and holiday albums alongside pop covers.

Its age helps explain the number. A song that is nearly two hundred years old has had a long time to collect arrangements. Bing Crosby recorded it in 1935 and sold more than 35 million copies worldwide, according to Newsweek.

2. “Yesterday”

Among pop songs, “Yesterday” is the usual winner. Guinness World Records puts its recorded covers at more than 1,600. Other tallies are lower or higher depending on what they count. One cover blogger cited 1,352 documented versions on SecondHandSongs in 2025.

The recording itself is spare. Paul McCartney’s vocal, an acoustic guitar and a string quartet arranged by George Martin made up the June 1965 session. BMI reported the song was performed over seven million times in the 20th century alone.

3. “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction”

The Rolling Stones’ 1965 hit sits second on both the Far Out and Mental Floss lists. A 2022 SecondHandSongs based tally gave it over 351 versions, credited to Keith Richards and Mick Jagger. That’s well below “Yesterday,” but still a huge number for a song built on a fuzzed guitar riff.

Part of its appeal to other artists is how adaptable that riff is. Otis Redding recorded a famous soul version in 1965, and later covers have ranged from punk to funk. The song proves that a loud, aggressive original can travel just as well as a gentle ballad.

4. “Love Me Tender”

Elvis Presley’s ballad ranks third on the lists from Far Out and Mental Floss. It first appeared in 1956, and its melody was adapted from the Civil War era song “Aura Lee.” That borrowed tune was already familiar to many listeners before Presley sang it.

The slow pace and simple chords make it easy for almost any singer to take on. Country artists, crooners and rock bands have all tried it. Its reputation as an Elvis signature hasn’t stopped others from claiming it.

5. “Eleanor Rigby”

The Beatles appear on the lists more than any other act. The Beatles are described as the most covered songwriting entity in music history, with nearly 10,000 cover versions. “Eleanor Rigby,” from the 1966 album Revolver, is among their most reworked tracks.

Counts vary by source. One whosampled.com derived list put it at 349 covers, second only to “Yesterday” at 422. Aretha Franklin recorded a notable version in 1969, which shows how a stark song about loneliness fit soul and jazz arrangements.

6. “My Way”

Frank Sinatra’s 1969 recording is the best known version, yet the song began in France as “Comme d’habitude.” Paul Anka wrote the English lyrics. Sinatra’s take turned a borrowed melody into one of pop’s best known statements of self belief.

Its popularity as a cover owes a lot to how often people perform it at karaoke bars and memorial services. Sid Vicious and Elvis Presley both recorded versions. It sits sixth on the Far Out list of the most covered songs.

7. “Bridge Over Troubled Water”

According to SecondHandSongs, there are nearly 600 versions of this Simon & Garfunkel ballad. Released in January 1970, it was covered within weeks by Johnny Mathis and Stevie Wonder. That speed is unusual even for a hit.

The 2022 SecondHandSongs based tally credited Paul Simon with over 584 versions of the song. Aretha Franklin’s 1971 gospel flavored take is among the most admired. The song’s rising final verse gives singers room to show off, which probably helps.

8. “Ain’t No Sunshine”

Bill Withers wrote and recorded it in 1971, and it appears eighth on both the Far Out and Mental Floss lists. The song is built on a short, repeated lyric in the middle. That repetition gives cover artists a loose frame to fill with their own style.

Its minor key mood and sparse arrangement have attracted performers from many genres. Michael Jackson recorded a version early in his solo career. Few songs this stripped down have lasted so well as cover material.

9. “Hallelujah”

Leonard Cohen’s song is the newest on this list, first released in 1984. It had a slow start commercially. Jeff Buckley’s 1994 recording and its use in the 2001 film Shrek helped it reach a far larger audience.

Far Out ranks it ninth among the most covered songs in history. Its verses can be rearranged or swapped, so many performers choose their own set of lyrics. That flexibility is one reason new versions keep appearing in the 2020s.
