The Airport Tunnel Secret: How to Save $10 on Every Ride to the Strip

Millions of travelers land in Las Vegas every year with one goal in mind: get to the Strip fast and start having fun. What almost nobody tells you is that the very first ride from the airport could already be draining your wallet. Not because Vegas is expensive. Because of a route. A specific route. One that taxi drivers have used for decades to quietly add extra charges to your fare while you stare out the window at unfamiliar streets.

The good news? Once you know this trick, you can protect your money every single time. Let’s dive in.

Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas set a new annual passenger record for the second consecutive year, serving 57.6 million travelers in 2023. To put that in perspective, that is roughly the entire population of South Korea walking through one set of terminals every single year. In 2024, over 58.4 million passengers passed through the airport, meaning traffic keeps climbing.

With that level of volume, the airport’s taxi and rideshare lines are constantly packed. Licensed taxicabs are available 24 hours a day, with fares ranging from $15 to $30 depending on traffic and your destination on the Strip or downtown. The sheer number of rides happening every hour makes it nearly impossible for regulators to watch every single trip. That is exactly why knowing the rules yourself matters so much.

Here’s the thing most first-time visitors never figure out. Going to and from the airport and the south Strip especially, but also the center Strip and even the north Strip, it is considered “long-hauling” when a cab driver takes the tunnel-connector route. This tunnel route runs through the runway underpass and connects to I-15, adding noticeable mileage to a trip that could be far shorter on surface streets.

It usually adds at least $8 and up to $15 to a fare. A legislative audit of the state Taxicab Authority estimated that 22.5% of the 6.6 million rides given by local taxicabs to and from Reid were deceptively long, overcharging passengers collectively to the tune of $14.8 million. That is not a rounding error. That is a staggering amount of money quietly taken from unsuspecting tourists.

“Long Hauling” occurs when a taxi driver takes the least direct route without the passenger’s permission. It is a defined violation, not a gray area. Nevada law prohibits taxi drivers from deceiving or attempting to deceive any passenger, and drivers are subject to fines, suspension, or revocation for failing to charge the correct zone amount.

The enforcement is real too. In one reported period, the Taxicab Authority noted 4,238 violations and wrote 3,419 citations, including 994 for long-hauling, generating $356,196 in citation revenue. Honestly, that is still a fraction of the $14.8 million lost to passengers. The math does not quite add up in travelers’ favor.

Regulators eventually stepped in with a smart solution. In September 2019, zone pricing from the airport was introduced for trips to the south Strip at $19, center Strip at $23, and north Strip at $27. So for destinations on the Strip, no matter which way cab drivers go, the fares are fixed.

Long-hauling between the airport and the Strip will now be next to impossible, at least as far as the fare is concerned. Whether a cabbie takes the tunnel or goes direct, the money owed by the passenger will be the same. That is genuinely good news for Strip-bound travelers. However, the zone system has its limits, and for destinations outside those zones, the old metered risks can still apply.

Las Vegas uses a zone-based flat-rate system for airport taxi fares, one of the few cities with this setup. You pay a fixed rate based on your destination zone, not the meter. This means no surprises from traffic delays or longer routes. Think of it like ordering a fixed-price meal instead of paying per bite. Simple, predictable, and much harder to manipulate.

Effective December 20, 2019, all direct taxi trips from Harry Reid International Airport to listed locations are charged at a fixed rate. Passengers paying with credit cards will be charged a $3.00 fee over the zone amount, so carrying cash to the exact zone fare is a small but real additional money-saver.

Zone pricing does not protect you everywhere. If you are going south and east into Henderson, however, the tunnel is the only way to go, unless a cab driver is long-hauling by going the long way around on surface streets. For downtown Las Vegas hotels, which fall outside the three designated zones, the taxi fare is calculated by a taximeter. The meter inside the taxi calculates the cost of your ride and displays the fare.

Unless your destination is Downtown Las Vegas, the far North Strip, or West Flamingo Road, you should specify to your driver to use Paradise Road or Swenson Avenue instead of the airport tunnel. It sounds simple but most people never say a word. They just hop in and assume the driver will take the most reasonable path. Sometimes that is a costly assumption.

Many travelers assume Uber or Lyft are automatically cheaper than taxis. Sometimes that is true. Often it is not. Surge pricing at Vegas airport can be brutal. A $17 UberX can become $40 during peak demand. Major events, late-night arrivals, and busy weekends all trigger surge multipliers that can make rideshare more expensive than a flat-rate taxi.

Rideshare services like Uber and Lyft service the airport, and estimated fares are usually slightly lower than taxicabs under normal conditions. The key phrase there is “normal conditions.” Las Vegas does not do normal very often. Uber and Lyft operate from dedicated pickup areas at Harry Reid Airport, not the main taxi area, meaning you will walk further and potentially wait longer than for a taxi.

Let’s be real, this is where the biggest savings actually live. The RTC Centennial Express is the cheapest way to travel from the airport to the Strip, at a bus fare of just $2.00. Compare that to a $23 flat-rate taxi to the center Strip, and you are looking at savings of more than $20 per person. For a couple traveling together, that is dinner money right there.

The CX Centennial Express provides direct bus service to and from Harry Reid International Airport, UNLV, the Bonneville Transit Center in downtown Las Vegas, and the Centennial Hills Transit Center. Run by the Regional Transportation Commission, it travels from the Centennial Hills Transit Center to Downtown Las Vegas, with continuing service to Harry Reid International Airport’s Terminal 1 and 3. On the Vegas Strip, the Centennial Express only operates one stop at Flamingo Avenue and Las Vegas Blvd, putting you right in the center of the Strip and within walking distance to many hotels and casinos.

Knowledge is only useful if you actually apply it at the right moment. Before you step into any taxi, state your destination clearly and confirm the flat zone fare applies. Every taxi driver attends a class put on by the Taxicab Authority in which the penalties for long-hauling are emphasized, so drivers are fully aware of the rules. Do not be shy about invoking them.

For complaints regarding taxicabs in Clark County, you can contact the Taxicab Authority at 702-668-4000 or 702-486-6532, or fill out a Las Vegas taxi cab complaint form. Keep the cab number, which is always visible inside the vehicle, in case something feels off. Nevada Taxicab Authority enforcement personnel are on duty 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, so you always have someone to call. The system exists to protect you. Use it.

Las Vegas is designed to take your money in fun and creative ways. Your taxi ride from the airport should not be one of them. The tunnel secret is not really a secret anymore, it is a documented, regulated issue that authorities have spent years trying to curb. Now you know about zone pricing, the tunnel route problem, rideshare surge risks, and a two-dollar bus that drops you right in the heart of the Strip.

The choice of how you ride, and how much you pay, is entirely yours. The real question is: how many times have you already paid extra without ever knowing it?
