What a Cat’s Slow Blink Means, According to Animal Behavior Researchers

Your cat looks at you from across the room, eyelids drooping, and then shuts its eyes for a moment. Many owners have long called it a cat kiss. Researchers decided to find out whether that guess holds up.

The work comes from psychologists in the UK, and it has been widely discussed ever since it appeared. Here is what they found, how they tested it, and what remains unclear.

It’s more than one lazy blink. A slow blink sequence involves a series of half blinks, where the eyelids move toward each other without fully closing, followed by either a prolonged narrowing of the eyes or a full eye closure. The whole thing is quiet and easy to miss.

Researchers describe it as a sequence rather than a single movement. One published figure shows it moving from a neutral face to a half blink, then toward eye closure and an eye narrowing expression. Watch for that gradual softening next time your cat looks your way.

The Study That Put It to the Test

Before 2020, the slow blink was mostly folk wisdom. It had been recognised in cats for a long time, but this was the first study to investigate its role in communication between humans and cats. The paper appeared in the journal Scientific Reports.

The team came from the University of Sussex and the University of Portsmouth. Their paper was titled “The role of cat eye narrowing movements in cat–human communication.” Tasmin Humphrey and Karen McComb were among the researchers involved.

Experiment One: Owners Blink at Their Cats

The first experiment used pet cats in their own homes. A total of 21 cats from 14 different households took part. Once a cat was settled, the owner sat about a meter away and slow blinked whenever the cat looked at them.

Cameras recorded everyone’s faces, and the footage was compared against moments with no interaction. Cat half blinks and eye narrowing happened more often after owners slow blinked than when there was no owner and cat interaction. In plain terms, the cats tended to answer in kind.

Experiment Two: Strangers Join In

The second test asked a harder question. It involved 24 cats from eight households, and the blinking was done by researchers who had no prior contact with the cats. The cats weren’t just being polite to their owners.

Here, the researchers also held out a hand. Cats were more likely to approach the experimenter after a slow blink than when the experimenter wore a neutral expression. The authors concluded that slow blink sequences may work as a form of positive emotional communication between cats and humans.

Eye contact means different things to different species. The slow blink has been interpreted as a way of signaling benign intentions, since cats are thought to read unbroken staring as threatening. A fixed gaze can feel like a challenge.

Softening the eyes does the opposite. The gesture mirrors an expression cats use when they feel relaxed and non threatened. The authors were careful, though, and noted that further research would be needed before drawing firm conclusions about the emotional state involved.

A follow up study moved the idea into animal shelters. It measured whether a cat’s readiness to respond to a human initiated slow blink was associated with how quickly it was rehomed. The setting matters because shelter cats often have little time to make an impression.

The result was striking. Cats that answered human slow blinking with eye closures of their own were rehomed quicker than cats that closed their eyes less. Cats first identified as more nervous around humans also showed a trend toward longer total slow blink movements in response.

The method is simple. Narrow your eyes as you would in a relaxed smile, then close them for a couple of seconds. Do it when your cat is already looking at you, and keep your body relaxed.

One summary of the research boiled it down to a short routine. Narrow your eyes, blink slowly, pause, and repeat. Don’t force it on a cat that’s stressed or hiding, and let the cat decide whether to respond.

The sample sizes were small, and the cats mostly lived in ordinary homes. That’s typical for early behavior studies, but it means the findings are a starting point rather than a final word. Scientists still find it difficult to know exactly why cats slow blink at humans.

Still, the evidence points in one direction. Understanding positive ways cats and humans interact can improve public understanding of cats, support feline welfare, and reveal more about the socio cognitive abilities of this under studied species. A slow blink from your cat is best read as a friendly signal, and one you can return.
