What's Driving You Loopy? – Clearing up confusion over Nevada's short-term license plates

LAS VEGAS ( KLAS ) – A viewer query about short-term plates that *you may be questioning about, too

And – imagine it or not – this time we’re *not* speaking about expired tags.

Viewer Karl despatched me a photograph of a automotive he got here throughout (the picture has been altered to guard the driving force/proprietor).

He wrote:

“In the last 6 months, I’ve seen 5 or 6 cars a day with temporary tags from New York. Many have license plate holders showing that they were bought in Las Vegas! Why would a local dealer sell a New York resident a car but allow it to be registered back there? Can you explain this to me?”

Karl, I *can* clarify.

That picture you despatched is a Nevada short-term plate, however the first two letters could also be complicated. I talked to Sean Sever from the Nevada Dept of Motor Automobiles. When the DMV went to the present system of temp tags, the primary two letters have been “N-V.” After that, he says, it’s simply quantity/letter sequencing. Once they used up numbers after “N-V” they went to “N-X” then “N-Y” and he says they’re now in “N-Z.”

Karl – and anybody else questioning the identical factor – I hope this helps. Thanks for writing.

Buckle up, drive rigorously – and, please put down that cellphone!
