Turn on a classic rock station in 2026 and you’ll probably hear something recorded before the Berlin Wall came down. That’s not just a feeling. According to Mediabase, 26 of the 40 most played songs on classic rock radio in 2025 were released in the ’80s, compared to 13 from the ’70s and just one from the ’90s.
Mediabase monitors airplay in more than 180 markets, so the numbers reflect a wide slice of American radio. The ten songs below all appear in its 2025 rankings, some in the final year end list and some in the mid year tally. Rankings shift, so treat the positions as a snapshot.
Guns N’ Roses, “Sweet Child O’ Mine”
This one came from the 1987 album Appetite for Destruction. In Mediabase’s mid 2025 tally it sat at No. 3 among the most played songs on classic rock radio. That’s a remarkable spot for a track nearly four decades old.
Its opening guitar figure is recognizable within a second or two, which helps a programmer’s case. Radio likes songs that make a listener stop flipping the dial immediately.
Whitesnake, “Here I Go Again”
Whitesnake’s 1987 version of the song became the band’s biggest hit. It ranked No. 4 in the mid 2025 tally, helped along by a video starring Tawny Kitaen. The band’s “Is This Love” and “Still of the Night” also show up in the Top 500.
The song has been around in different forms, but the glossy 1987 recording is the one stations play. It fits neatly between harder rock and softer ballads, so it works in nearly any daypart.
Bon Jovi, “You Give Love a Bad Name”
The lead single from 1986’s Slippery When Wet was No. 5 in the mid 2025 tally. The record turned Bon Jovi into a stadium act, and radio has kept the song close ever since.
Bon Jovi is a steady presence on these lists. The band reaches the Top 500 six times, and “Wanted Dead or Alive” lands at No. 22 in the final ranking. That depth explains why you rarely go a day without hearing them.
Ozzy Osbourne, “Crazy Train”
Released in 1980 on Blizzard of Ozz, “Crazy Train” was sixth in the mid 2025 tally. It’s the oldest song on this list, barely inside the decade.
Its riff is a rite of passage for young guitarists, which keeps it culturally alive beyond the airwaves. Stations get a hard rock staple that doesn’t sound dated next to newer tracks.
Def Leppard, “Pour Some Sugar on Me”
This 1987 single sat at No. 13 in the mid 2025 tally. The song’s story is a little unexpected. Def Leppard’s Hysteria didn’t really catch on in the United States until seven months after its release, thanks to this single.
That slow burn probably helped its longevity. The album kept producing hits, and several of them, such as “Rocket” and “Armageddon It,” also appear in the Top 500.
AC/DC, “You Shook Me All Night Long”
From 1980’s Back in Black, this track was No. 17 in the mid 2025 tally. The title song of that album, “Back in Black,” also made the list, at No. 32.
The record came out right at the start of the decade and set the tone for hard rock on the radio. Few rock songs are as simple, direct and easy to sing along with in a car.
Bon Jovi, “Wanted Dead or Alive”
Also from Slippery When Wet, this one finished 2025 at No. 22 on the Mediabase classic rock list. It is a different kind of Bon Jovi song, built around a road weary, acoustic opening rather than a big chorus.
Programmers often use it to change the pace between louder tracks. Its steady spot in the Top 25 shows that a slower number can compete with the loudest anthems.
Bryan Adams, “Summer of ’69”
The song comes from 1984’s Reckless. Mediabase’s mid 2025 list put it at No. 24. The final ranking was close behind, at No. 27.
Adams has only two songs in the Top 500, and both come from that album. The other, “Run to You,” reached No. 273, so “Summer of ’69” does most of the heavy lifting. It’s also a seasonal favorite, which means it gets extra play when the weather warms up.
Guns N’ Roses, “Paradise City”
Another track from Appetite for Destruction, “Paradise City” was No. 25 in the mid 2025 tally. That makes the album responsible for two of the songs on this list.
The track builds from a mellow opening into a fast, chaotic finish, and radio stations often play it in full. It shows that a long, shifting song can still hold a spot in heavy rotation decades later.
Phil Collins, “In the Air Tonight”
This 1981 debut solo single from Face Value entered the 2025 final chart at No. 39. It is also the theme song for Monday Night Football and the center of a New Year’s Eve trend where people start it at a precise time to hit the drum break at midnight.
Unlike most of the guitar driven songs here, it relies on atmosphere and a famous drum entrance. Its place on a classic rock chart shows how wide the format has become.
