A movie soundtrack doesn’t usually compete with the biggest pop and rock albums of its day. The ones that reach No. 1 on the Billboard 200 tend to be cultural events that people play long after the credits roll.
The nine albums below span five decades, from disco to Disney. Each one reached the top of the chart, and the facts here come from long-established chart and awards records.
The Bodyguard (1992)
Whitney Houston’s soundtrack for the Kevin Costner thriller spent twenty weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. That’s one of the longest runs the chart has seen for any album, soundtrack or otherwise.
Its lead single, “I Will Always Love You,” a song written by Dolly Parton, spent fourteen weeks at No. 1 on the Hot 100. The album also won Album of the Year at the Grammys, and it’s widely reported to have sold more than forty million copies worldwide.
Saturday Night Fever (1977)
The Bee Gees defined the disco era with this double album, which logged twenty-four weeks at No. 1. It tied the film’s star, John Travolta, to a sound that became shorthand for the late seventies.
Songs like “Stayin’ Alive,” “How Deep Is Your Love” and “Night Fever” carried the record. It also won Album of the Year at the Grammys, which was a big moment for a disco release.
Purple Rain (1984)
Prince and the Revolution made an album that worked just as well without the movie. It held the No. 1 spot for twenty-four weeks, matching the run of Saturday Night Fever.
Both “When Doves Cry” and “Let’s Go Crazy” reached No. 1 on the Hot 100. The record is often cited as proof that a film tie-in could be an artist’s defining statement.
Dirty Dancing (1987)
This one was a surprise. A modestly budgeted summer film turned into a long-running chart hit, with the soundtrack staying at No. 1 for eighteen weeks.
“(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life,” sung by Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes, reached No. 1 on the Hot 100 and won an Oscar and a Grammy. The album mixed new songs with oldies, which helped it reach a wide audience.
Footloose (1984)
Kenny Loggins’ title track set the tone for an album built almost entirely on singles. The soundtrack spent ten weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200.
Two songs from it reached the top of the Hot 100, Loggins’ “Footloose” and Deniece Williams’ “Let’s Hear It for the Boy.” That kind of singles strength was common in the best chart soundtracks of the eighties.
Frozen (2013)
Disney’s animated hit proved that a children’s film could dominate the album chart. The soundtrack spent thirteen weeks at No. 1, in non-consecutive stretches, across 2014.
Idina Menzel’s “Let It Go” won the Oscar for Best Original Song. The album was also reported by Nielsen as the top seller of 2014 in the United States.
Encanto (2021)
Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote the songs for Disney’s Colombian family story, and the soundtrack reached No. 1 in early 2022. It went on to spend nine weeks at the top.
The song that powered it, “We Don’t Talk About Bruno,” also reached No. 1 on the Hot 100. A streaming era hit of that size is rare for a film song.
Waiting to Exhale (1995)
Babyface produced and wrote much of this album. It featured Whitney Houston, Toni Braxton, Mary J. Blige, Aretha Franklin and others.
The soundtrack spent five weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. Houston’s “Exhale (Shoop Shoop)” topped the Hot 100, and the album remains a landmark for R&B on screen.
Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Mix Vol. 1 (2014)
This one worked differently from the others. It was made up entirely of previously released songs from the seventies, including Blue Swede’s “Hooked on a Feeling” and Redbone’s “Come and Get Your Love.”
It became the first soundtrack of that kind to reach No. 1 on the Billboard 200. The result showed that a carefully chosen playlist could compete with an album of new material.
