7 Child Actors Who Left Hollywood for Good

Child stardom looks glamorous from the outside, all premieres and magazine covers, but plenty of young actors who tasted that fame decided it wasn’t worth keeping. Some walked away quietly after a single role. Others spent years building momentum before choosing school, family, or an entirely different profession instead. What follows are seven performers whose names once filled marquees and who, for very different reasons, never looked back once the cameras stopped rolling.

Mara Wilson charmed audiences as the title character in Matilda and as Robin Williams’s daughter in Mrs. Doubtfire, becoming one of the defining faces of 1990s family cinema. She left acting behind in 2000, at around age 12, following the release of Thomas and the Magic Railroad. The decision wasn’t driven by a single dramatic moment but by a slow accumulation of rejection and industry pressure around her appearance as she grew older.

Wilson’s departure from acting wasn’t about career failure or lack of opportunities but rather about recognizing that the entertainment industry’s demands were incompatible with her well-being and authentic self-expression, having spoken openly about how child fame distorts normal development. She went on to earn a degree from New York University and reinvented herself as a writer and voice actress rather than an on-screen performer. Today she lends her voice to audiobooks and animated shows, a career path far removed from the red carpets of her childhood.

2. Peter Ostrum

Long before Timothée Chalamet or Johnny Depp took on the role, Peter Ostrum played Charlie Bucket in the original 1971 film Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. After the film’s release, he was offered a three-picture contract that would have launched a traditional child acting career, but he turned it down, finding that he didn’t enjoy the acting experience despite the film’s success. It remains his only screen credit to this day.

Instead of chasing more roles, Ostrum followed a passion for animals that had grown out of a horse his parents bought him around the time the movie came out. He attended Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, receiving his doctorate in 1984, and began practicing as a veterinarian in July 1985 before retiring in September 2023. He spent decades treating dairy cows and farm animals in upstate New York, a life about as far from Hollywood as one could imagine.

3. Danny Lloyd

As Danny Torrance in Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining, young Danny Lloyd delivered one of horror cinema’s most haunting child performances, famously without even realizing he was filming a scary movie. Lloyd retired from acting after his appearance as Young Liddy in the 1982 television film Will: G. Gordon Liddy, having realized that the motion picture industry was boring and not for him. Unlike many former child stars, he stepped away almost immediately rather than fading out gradually.

He spent the following decades building a completely different life away from any spotlight. He became a professor at the Elizabethtown Community and Technical College in 2004, teaching biology to students who often have no idea their instructor once starred opposite Jack Nicholson. He briefly returned for a small cameo in 2019’s Doctor Sleep, but that appearance was the exception rather than a comeback.

4. Josh Saviano

Josh Saviano spent six seasons as Paul Pfeiffer, the bespectacled best friend on The Wonder Years, becoming one of the more recognizable young faces on 1980s and early 1990s television. After The Wonder Years ended in 1993, Saviano stopped acting, went to college and became a lawyer. The shift from soundstage to classroom was deliberate and complete.

Saviano graduated from Yale in 1998, majoring in political science, then earned his doctor of law degree from Yeshiva University’s Cardozo School of Law and later worked for a New York City law firm as a corporate and intellectual property transactional attorney. He briefly returned to television screens in 2014 and 2015 playing an attorney on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, but that novelty appearance only underscored how firmly his real career had settled into law rather than acting.

5. Jonathan Taylor Thomas

Known to millions simply as JTT, Jonathan Taylor Thomas spent eight years as Randy Taylor on Home Improvement and voiced young Simba in The Lion King, making him one of the biggest teen idols of his era. He left the series in 1998 primarily to focus on his education, wanting to experience life as a student after feeling he had been working non-stop since the age of seven. The choice puzzled some of his castmates at the time, but he stuck with it.

He was accepted into Harvard University to study history and philosophy, also studying abroad at St. Andrews in Scotland, before graduating with a bachelor’s from Columbia University in 2010. He made a few low-key returns to acting and directing on Last Man Standing in the following years, but nothing resembling his previous level of fame, and he has largely kept his adult life private ever since.

6. Carrie Henn

Carrie Henn appeared in exactly one film, playing Newt opposite Sigourney Weaver in James Cameron’s Aliens in 1986, a performance that left a lasting mark on science fiction fans. Working with James Cameron and Sigourney Weaver on that project, she eventually decided never to act again. There was no messy fallout or industry disillusionment reported, simply a choice to move in a different direction entirely.

Henn opted for a life away from cameras, earning a degree and becoming an elementary school teacher, spending years in education with no interest in revisiting her short time on screen. For a generation of moviegoers who grew up quoting her character’s lines, it can be surprising to learn that the actress behind Newt has spent her career shaping young minds in a classroom rather than on a set.

7. Ariana Richards

Ariana Richards played Lex Murphy, the tech-savvy granddaughter navigating dinosaurs in Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park, a role that made her instantly recognizable to millions of 1990s moviegoers. Rather than continuing to chase film and television roles as an adult, she redirected her creative energy toward painting. She built a successful career in fine art, specializing in impressionist landscapes and portraits, and received awards at national oil painting competitions.

Her transition from blockbuster child star to working artist has been steady rather than dramatic, unfolding gallery show by gallery show rather than through any single announced retirement. She still occasionally appears at fan conventions tied to her Jurassic Park legacy, but her professional identity today is rooted in canvas and brush rather than scripts and call sheets.

Taken together, these seven stories share a common thread: each of these actors had genuine access to further fame and chose something else instead. Some walked toward stable, unglamorous professions like veterinary medicine, law, or teaching. Others found a different kind of creative outlet entirely, whether through writing, painting, or academic study. What links them isn’t tragedy or industry burnout in every case, but simply the decision that a life outside the spotlight suited them better than one inside it.
