Awards season runs on the assumption that everyone wants in. Studios campaign, publicists lobby, and nominees pose gratefully on red carpets. Yet every so often, a performer looks at that golden ticket and simply says no thanks, asking to be struck from the list before a single vote is even cast. These are not stories about losing gracefully or skipping a ceremony out of scheduling conflicts. They are deliberate, often uncomfortable decisions to reject the entire premise of competing at all.
1. George C. Scott and his double refusal at the Oscars
In 1962, he rejected a Best Supporting Actor nomination at the 34th Academy Awards for his role in The Hustler, arguing that acting should not be reduced to a competition, according to The New York Times. That objection was not a one time outburst. Scott had been saying for years that he had no interest in awards or award shows and had even asked the Academy to withdraw his name from a previous Best Supporting Actor nomination for “The Hustler” in 1962.
Nine years later he did it again, this time for a Best Actor nomination he could not stop the Academy from honoring. Scott had reportedly sent a telegram informing the Academy about his decision, writing “I respectfully request that you withdraw my name from the list of nominees. My request is in no way intended to denigrate my colleagues.” The Academy kept him on the ballot anyway, and he won, proving that a performer’s wishes and an institution’s rules do not always line up.
2. Nick Cave and the horse race he refused to enter
Long before streaming era artists made a habit of snubbing awards shows, the Australian musician Nick Cave set a template for doing it with style. Nick Cave declined his nomination for Best Male Artist at the 1996 MTV Video Music Awards. It was not a quiet gesture either.
Cave put his objection in writing rather than letting a publicist handle it. He even sent a formal letter asking that his name be withdrawn, famously saying, “My muse is not a horse, and I am not in any horse race.” The line has outlived the ceremony itself, still quoted decades later as one of the sharper rebukes any artist has aimed at the awards machine.
3. Drake and his repeated exits from the Grammy ballot
Drake’s relationship with the Recording Academy has been rocky for years, and in December 2021 that tension produced one of the clearest examples of a nomination being pulled at an artist’s own request. Drake wanted no part in competing for a Grammy, and the four time winner and his management asked the Recording Academy to withdraw his two nominations from the final round ballot, a request that the academy honored. Those nominations covered his album Certified Lover Boy and his single Way 2 Sexy.
What made the move notable was how completely the academy complied. No additional artists were added to the Best Rap Performance or Best Rap Album categories in Drake’s place, and the four remaining artists competed for the prizes. It was not his first brush with skipping the process either; Drake had previously refused to submit his album, More Life, in 2017.
4. Iron Maiden and their puzzled exit from a rock award
Not every withdrawal comes wrapped in a grand statement about art or justice. In 2008, the British metal band Iron Maiden pulled out of a category they were technically favored to win. Iron Maiden withdrew their name from Vodafone’s Live Music Award for Best Live Return, with other nominees including Spice Girls, Led Zeppelin, and The Verve.
The band’s statement leaned more toward dry humor than protest. They said via a statement on their official website, “We are not quite sure where we are returning from. Very flattering though.” It remains one of the odder entries on this list, a band essentially shrugging off recognition rather than rejecting it on principle.
5. Chris Brown and the Kids’ Choice Awards controversy
Sometimes a nomination becomes untenable because of events unfolding in real time. In early 2009, Chris Brown found himself in that exact position. Chris Brown withdrew his name from the Kids’ Choice Awards 2009 after controversy over his nomination exploded, following a petition signed by 10,000 people asking Nickelodeon to remove his name from various categories after the singer, then 19, appeared in court on assault charges brought by his girlfriend Rihanna.
The withdrawal was less an artistic statement and more a recognition that the timing made any celebration impossible. It stands out on this list because the decision came from outside pressure meeting an artist’s own judgment about when a nomination simply does not belong.
6. The children’s music trio who asked to step aside on principle
One of the more striking recent cases came from a corner of the Grammys that rarely draws headlines. The Okee Dokee Brothers, Alastair Moock and Dog on Fleas sent a letter to the Recording Academy requesting that their names be removed from final round ballots, calling the category’s lack of diversity an “embarrassment for the field of children’s music.”
Their reasoning was rooted in the data. The joint letter said, “We are deeply grateful to the Recording Academy and its voting members for the honor we’ve received, but we can’t in good conscience benefit from a process that has, both this year and historically, so overlooked women, performers of color, and most especially Black performers.” The Academy ultimately declined to fully honor the request, but the artists’ willingness to walk away from a nomination on their own terms still counts as a genuine refusal, even without the outcome they wanted.
7. Frank Ocean and his decision to opt out before nominations existed
Frank Ocean took a slightly different route than the others on this list, choosing to remove himself from consideration before any nomination could even happen. In 2016, Frank Ocean made one of the most significant Grammy statements of the streaming era by refusing to submit his critically acclaimed album Blonde for consideration, despite widespread expectations that the album would receive multiple nominations.
His reasoning tied directly to how he viewed the institution’s relevance. Having already won two Grammys earlier in his career, he later described the Recording Academy as “dated” and questioned whether it still represented artists working the way he did. It is a preemptive version of the same impulse driving everyone else on this list: a decision that recognition on someone else’s terms simply is not worth accepting.
Taken together, these seven moments say less about ego and more about where performers draw their own lines. Some acted out of principle, some out of exhaustion with a system they felt misjudged them, and at least one out of pure bewilderment at being nominated at all.
