Most film musicals are built in a studio first. The cast records the songs weeks or months ahead, then lip syncs to the playback while the cameras roll.
A smaller group of films has skipped that routine and captured the singing as it happened. The results can sound rougher and more intimate, and sometimes more surprising. Here are eight films, from the 1970s to the 2020s, where live vocals shaped the finished movie.
Les Misérables (2012)

Director Tom Hooper made the most talked about decision of this film’s production: the cast would sing live during filming. Actors wore hidden earpieces and heard a pianist playing along, so they could set their own tempo. An orchestra was added afterward.
The approach is most visible in Anne Hathaway’s “I Dreamed a Dream,” a close up performance built around emotion rather than polish. Hathaway won the Oscar for best supporting actress for the role. The film also won the Oscar for sound mixing, a category that suited its live recording method.
Once (2007)

This small Irish film starred Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová, who were working musicians before the cameras arrived. The songs were performed as part of the scenes rather than layered on later. That gave the film the feel of a real rehearsal room or a street corner.
“Falling Slowly” won the Oscar for best original song. Later, the story was adapted into a stage musical, which went on to win the Tony Award for best musical in 2012.
Nashville (1975)

Robert Altman’s sprawling country music drama let its actors perform songs on camera, and many of them wrote their own material. Keith Carradine’s “I’m Easy” became the film’s standout. It won the Oscar for best original song.
Altman was known for overlapping dialogue and loose, observational scenes, and the music fit that style. Performances feel like moments the camera happened to catch. It’s an early example of how live music can make a film feel less staged.
A Star Is Born (2018)

Bradley Cooper directed and starred, and he and Lady Gaga sang live for much of the film. Concert scenes were filmed in front of real festival crowds, including at Coachella, so the energy you see wasn’t staged from scratch. Cooper also spent a long stretch preparing his singing and guitar playing.
“Shallow” won the Oscar for best original song, along with a Grammy. The soundtrack was a major commercial success, and it showed that live recorded vocals could connect with a wide audience.

La La Land (2016)

Damien Chazelle’s film is often discussed for its polished dance numbers, yet some of its singing was captured on set. Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone were not trained stage singers, and the film leaned into that natural, slightly fragile sound. Stone’s audition song is the best known example.
The approach suited a story about ambition and uncertainty. La La Land won six Oscars, including best director for Chazelle and best actress for Stone. Its vocals were never meant to sound like a Broadway cast recording.
Annette (2021)

Leos Carax’s unusual rock opera starred Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard, with songs by the band Sparks. Driver sang live on set, including scenes where he performed as a stand up comedian. That choice made his awkward, tense stage persona feel more immediate.
The film opened the Cannes Film Festival in 2021, and Carax won the festival’s best director prize. It divided audiences, though few people forgot the singing. Live performance is central to how the film works.
Wicked (2024)

Director Jon M. Chu said that Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande sang live on set for much of the film. Earpieces carried the music cues, and the actors adjusted their performances from take to take. Some prerecorded material was still used, as is common in large productions.
The film earned strong reviews and box office success, and it was nominated for many Oscars. Erivo and Grande were both nominated for acting awards, and the film won two Oscars, for costume design and production design. The sequel, Wicked: For Good, followed in November 2025.
Joker: Folie à Deux (2024)

Todd Phillips’ sequel turned the dark Joker story into a musical, with Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga singing live on set. The songs were mostly familiar standards, performed in a rough, character driven style rather than a showy one. Phillips has described live singing as essential to the film’s tone.
The film was released in October 2024 and received a largely negative response from critics and audiences. It also performed poorly at the box office. Even so, its live vocal approach remains one of the more distinctive choices in recent studio filmmaking.
Final Thoughts

Live singing on a film set is rarely the easy route, and the results vary. Still, these eight films show how much character can come through when a performance is captured in the moment.
