8 TV Series That Changed Their Lead Actor Between Seasons

Swapping the star of a show sounds like a risk no network would take on purpose. Yet it has happened for decades, sometimes because an actor was ill, sometimes because of contract disputes, and sometimes because the show was designed that way from the start.

The eight series below range from 1960s American sitcoms to British crime dramas still airing in 2026. Each one handled the handover differently, and the results were just as varied.

The fantasy sitcom Bewitched ran on ABC from 1964 to 1972. Dick York played Darrin Stephens, the mortal husband of the witch Samantha, for the first five seasons. His chronic back problems, which stemmed from an old injury, eventually forced him out of the role.

Dick Sargent took over as Darrin from the sixth season in 1969. The writers offered no real explanation for the new face, and the show simply carried on. Viewers have debated for years which actor suited the part better.

The CBS action comedy followed cousins Bo and Luke Duke, played by John Schneider and Tom Wopat. Early in the fifth season, which aired in the 1982 to 1983 TV year, the pair walked away amid a dispute over pay and merchandising income.

The producers brought in two new cousins, Coy and Vance Duke, played by Byron Cherry and Christopher Mayer. The substitutes never caught on with audiences. Schneider and Wopat came back later in the season once the dispute was settled.

Robin of Sherwood

This British series from the mid 1980s gave the Robin Hood legend a darker, more mystical tone. Michael Praed starred as Robin of Loxley through the first two series. His departure was written into the story, and the hero was killed off.

The show handled the change in an unusual way. Jason Connery arrived in the third series as Robert of Huntingdon, a new Robin who took up the same fight. The two actors played effectively different men, which let the series feel like a continuation instead of a replacement.

The cult series about a man and his robot friends mocking bad movies was created by Joel Hodgson, who also played its host. In 1993, during the fifth season, Hodgson left the show. His character escaped the space station in the story, and a new host followed.

Michael J. Nelson stepped in as Mike Nelson and stayed for the rest of the original run. The format was revived on Netflix in 2017 with Jonah Ray as host. A later revival season starred Emily Marsh, so the show has now changed its human lead more than once.

For fourteen years, John Nettles anchored the ITV village mystery as Chief Inspector Tom Barnaby. He left in 2011 after the thirteenth series, which closed out the first major era of the show.

Neil Dudgeon took over from the fourteenth series as DCI John Barnaby, Tom’s cousin. The in-story link made the transition smooth, and the show has kept running with that setup. It remains one of the longer lasting examples of a successful lead swap.

This BBC crime drama, set on the fictional Caribbean island of Saint Marie, has made rotating its detective part of its identity. Ben Miller starred in series 1 to 3, Kris Marshall in series 3 to 6, Ardal O’Hanlon in series 6 to 9, Ralf Little in series 9 to 13, and Don Gilet from series 14. The overlaps in those ranges reflect that new inspectors usually arrive during a season finale or a handover episode.

Ralf Little’s exit came in 2024. A newspaper report noted that he left after nearly five years playing lead detective Neville Parker. Don Gilet then debuted in the 2024 Christmas special and has led Series 14 and 15.

Peter Morgan’s Netflix drama about Queen Elizabeth II was built around recasting from the beginning. Claire Foy played the Queen in the first two seasons, covering her early reign. Olivia Colman took the role for the third and fourth seasons, which moved into middle age.

Imelda Staunton played the monarch in the fifth and sixth seasons, which brought the story into the 1990s and early 2000s. The show recast the entire ensemble each time, so the changes felt like chapters rather than disruptions. The series concluded in 2023 with its sixth season.

Doctor Who

The BBC series is the best known example of an actor swap written into the premise itself. The Doctor can regenerate, so each new lead is part of the story. The 2005 revival began with Christopher Eccleston, who stayed for only a single series before David Tennant took over.

Matt Smith, Peter Capaldi and Jodie Whittaker followed in turn, with Whittaker beginning in 2018. Tennant returned for a run of specials in 2023. Ncuti Gatwa then became the Doctor, and his first full season aired in 2024.
