Television has always liked to play fortune teller, but every so often a show gets uncomfortably close to reality years or even decades before it happens. Writers weren’t using crystal balls. They were paying attention to where science, culture, and human behavior seemed to be heading, and sometimes that attention paid off in eerie ways. 1. Black Mirror and the rise of digital resurrection
The first episode of season 2, “Be Right Back,” aired way back in 2013, depicting a bereaved and pregnant Martha who processes the loss of her partner, Ash, by ordering a digital and physical replica of him. At the time it read as speculative horror, a warning about grief turned into a subscription service. In 2013, this premise felt speculative, but today multiple startups have made it into a reality, with companies like HereAfter AI and Project December now creating realistic chatbots or avatars that reconstruct the personalities of deceased loved ones.
The show didn’t just guess that grief tech would exist. It guessed how uncanny and unsatisfying it would feel. That emotional accuracy is part of why “Be Right Back” still gets cited whenever a new AI companion app makes headlines, which happens more often now than it did even two years ago.
2. Black Mirror’s robot dogs turned out to be real hardware
Filmed purely in black and white, 2017’s “Metalhead” was one of the more straightforwardly apocalyptic Black Mirror episodes, following a woman fleeing from a pack of robotic dogs, a concept explicitly influenced by the mechanical canines of robotics company Boston Dynamics. That’s the twist here: the show wasn’t imagining something wholly new, it was extrapolating from a machine that already existed in labs.
“Metalhead” presents a terrifying vision of robotic dogs ruthlessly hunting humans, and inspired by real-life quadruped robots like Boston Dynamics’ Spot, this episode no longer seems far-fetched, since AI-driven machines are already deployed for security, surveillance and even warfare. Spot has since been used by police departments and utility companies, minus the hunting-humans part, thankfully. Still, the gap between fiction and function has narrowed faster than most viewers expected back in 2017.
3. Black Mirror’s memory implants foreshadowed brain-computer interfaces
Two of the three episodes in Black Mirror season 1 featured several of the most poignant predictions of the entire show, with the finale, “The Entire History of You,” going for a slightly more advanced idea: brain-computer interfaces, technologies that establish direct communication pathways with the brain and external devices. Nobody has a memory-recording implant behind their ear yet, but the underlying research direction was correct.
Two years after the episode aired, Google announced Google Glass, a headset the size of a pair of glasses with a camera mounted on the front, though the device was too far ahead of its time and the general public in 2013 clearly wasn’t ready for a world where anyone could be recorded at any moment. The technology has since crept back in through smart glasses and wearable cameras, arriving quietly instead of all at once.
4. Black Mirror’s Nosedive and the arrival of social scoring
“Nosedive” imagined a society where every human interaction gets a star rating, and those ratings determine your housing, your job prospects, even your access to flights. It sounded like satire in 2016. It sounds less like satire now.
“Nosedive” envisions a world where an AI-powered rating system dictates social status, employment and access to services, and while exaggerated, the premise reflects how algorithms now shape daily interactions by curating social media feeds, influencing job opportunities and determining creditworthiness. Add in China’s evolving social credit experiments and the constant low hum of online reputation management, and the episode reads less like fantasy and more like an early draft.
5. The Simpsons and the pandemic episode nobody could forget
Starting the list strong is the eerily accurate pandemic prediction made in 1993, when in the episode titled “Marge in Chains,” the Simpson family is sitting on the sofa as the news turns on and the anchor announces a deadly disease. The episode traced a virus originating overseas and spreading through American towns, which felt like a stretch for decades.
The show even predicted the symptoms including cold, cough, and body ache, and while it didn’t specify the duration, it did foreshadow the quarantine phase for the infected. When COVID-19 arrived in 2020, clips of the episode circulated widely online, not because The Simpsons had any special insight, but because the setup was uncomfortably close to what actually unfolded.
6. The Simpsons called the Higgs boson discovery years early
The show predicted science’s most unique particle, the Higgs boson, back in 1988, fourteen years before its discovery. That’s one of the stranger entries on any list like this, because it involves actual physics rather than social trends or gadgets.
The existence of the Higgs boson, or “God particle,” a breakthrough that helps explain how everything in the universe has mass, wasn’t confirmed by physicists until 2012, yet according to Dr. Simon Singh, author of a book on the show’s mathematical secrets, Homer stood in front of a blackboard with an equation that predicted the particle’s mass. Nobody claims the writers had inside knowledge of particle physics. It’s more likely a case of sharp writers embedding a real, if obscure, scientific idea into a joke, and reality eventually catching up to confirm it.
7. The Simpsons and the video call before video calls were normal
In “Lisa’s Wedding,” predicted in 1995, Lisa talks with Marge using her phone’s video chat capabilities, predating the popular FaceTime feature of today’s iPhones by fifteen years. At the time, video calling existed only in clunky, expensive corporate setups, nothing close to a casual phone habit.
The same episode also imagined a smartwatch-type device, well before a functional smartwatch was even in the works. Taken together, the episode reads less like a lucky guess and more like a reasonable extrapolation of where consumer electronics were already heading, dressed up as comedy set decades in the future.
8. The Simpsons and the political prediction that still gets brought up
Few Simpsons predictions get quoted as often as the brief flash-forward showing Lisa as president after a Trump administration, which aired long before Donald Trump entered electoral politics as a serious contender. Another accurate prediction from The Simpsons was Trump’s election in 2016, and the show has so far been right about several aspects of his life, including a shootout at one of his rallies.
The writers weren’t claiming inside knowledge of future elections. The joke worked because Trump was already a recognizable celebrity figure with political ambitions floated in interviews throughout the 1990s and 2000s. Still, watching the actual events play out on a much larger stage decades later gave the old gag a second life online, shared again and again whenever real news lined up with the punchline. None of these shows were actually predicting the future in any mystical sense. What they were doing, in each case, was noticing where technology, politics, or culture already seemed to be drifting, then pushing that drift a little further for dramatic effect. Sometimes reality drifted in the same direction faster than anyone expected, which is really the whole explanation behind every uncanny “prediction” on this list.
