The Golden Globes and the Academy Awards often get lumped together as stops on the same road. Their voters are different groups, though, and they don’t always agree. Some Globe winners have walked away from the Oscars with nothing, and a few weren’t nominated at all.
The nine winners below show how often the two ceremonies split. In some cases the Oscars skipped a performance entirely. In others they nominated it and then handed the trophy to someone else.
Jim Carrey, The Truman Show

Jim Carrey won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Drama for The Truman Show. It was a notable result for an actor best known at the time for broad comedy. The win was widely read as a sign that he could handle serious material.
The Oscars didn’t follow. The film earned Academy Award nominations for Ed Harris, director Peter Weir and the original screenplay, but Carrey wasn’t nominated. He won a second Globe for Man on the Moon, and again the Academy didn’t nominate him.
Madonna, Evita

Madonna won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy for playing Eva Perón in Evita. The role was a big risk for a pop star, and the Globes rewarded it.
The Academy did not nominate her for acting. Evita did win the Oscar for Best Original Song with You Must Love Me. The film was recognized, but its lead performance wasn’t.
Hugh Grant, Four Weddings and a Funeral

Hugh Grant won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy for Four Weddings and a Funeral. The film made him an international star.
The Oscars embraced the movie but not the leading man. Four Weddings and a Funeral was nominated for Best Picture and for its original screenplay, yet Grant never appeared on the acting ballot. His Globe remains the main major award from that run.
Sacha Baron Cohen, Borat

Sacha Baron Cohen took the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy for Borat. A mockumentary performance in a mostly improvised film isn’t the usual kind of awards winner. That made the Globe win stand out.
The Academy gave the film a nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay, but Cohen wasn’t nominated for acting. The screenplay award went to The Departed. For Borat, the Globes were the only place where Cohen himself was honored.

Taron Egerton, Rocketman

Taron Egerton won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy for playing Elton John in Rocketman. He also did his own singing in the film, which helped his case with Globe voters.
The Oscars rewarded the film’s song, (I’m Gonna) Love Me Again, but not Egerton. He wasn’t among the Best Actor nominees that year. Joaquin Phoenix won that category for Joker.
Hugh Jackman, Les Misérables

Hugh Jackman won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy for playing Jean Valjean in Les Misérables. He took the award for a performance with the singing recorded live on set.
The Academy nominated him for Best Actor, but Daniel Day-Lewis won for Lincoln. Les Misérables did collect three Oscars in other categories. Jackman’s Globe was the top prize he took home from that awards season.
Glenn Close, The Wife

Glenn Close won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Drama for The Wife. Her subdued performance as the spouse of a Nobel laureate drew some of the strongest reviews of her late career.
She received an Oscar nomination, her seventh. Olivia Colman won for The Favourite, so Close went home empty handed again. She was nominated an eighth time for Hillbilly Elegy and lost that one too.
Demi Moore, The Substance

Demi Moore won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy for The Substance. It was a major career moment, and the Globe was the first major award of her career.
The Oscars nominated her for Best Actress, also a first. Mikey Madison won for Anora, so Moore didn’t take the trophy. Even so, the Globe win helped define the story of that awards season.
Fernanda Torres, I’m Still Here

Fernanda Torres won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Drama for I’m Still Here, the Brazilian film about a family under a military dictatorship. Her win came as a surprise to many observers because the field was crowded.
She was nominated for the Best Actress Oscar as well, but Mikey Madison won again. The film did win the Oscar for Best International Feature. Torres’s mother, Fernanda Montenegro, had also been nominated for Best Actress for Central Station.
