Westwood, Los Angeles – A silver sedan driven by an elderly woman veered out of control on Thursday afternoon, striking a bicyclist before crashing into the 99 Ranch Market and claiming three lives inside the store.[1][2]

The Chaotic Sequence Begins

Shortly after noon on February 5, the incident unfolded along Westwood Boulevard near Rochester Avenue, just blocks from UCLA. The driver hit a bicyclist about one block from the market, then continued forward and plowed into the storefront.[1] Firefighters arrived to find the vehicle embedded in the building, with victims trapped underneath. They quickly moved the car to reach those injured.

Local witnesses described a loud impact that echoed through the busy neighborhood. One bystander recalled the suddenness of the crash, noting ambulances arrived within minutes to remove the injured.[3] The store, a popular Asian grocery chain, saw its bakery section devastated by the intrusion.

Loss of Life Inside the Bakery

Three individuals perished at the scene: a 42-year-old woman, a 55-year-old man, and a 30-year-old man. Authorities confirmed they were inside the bakery when the sedan burst through.[1] Paramedics treated six to nine others on site, transporting several to hospitals.

Two victims suffered serious injuries, while others sustained minor wounds. The bicyclist declined medical transport after the initial strike. First responders established a triage area outside amid the wreckage.

First Responders Take Charge

Los Angeles Fire Department crews responded rapidly, organizing the chaotic scene. Spokesperson Erik Scott praised their efforts: “They arrived very quickly. They tried to make a very organized incident command out of a chaotic situation, and to treat the patients as quickly as possible and rapidly transport them to emergency rooms for definitive care.”[3]

Lyndsey Lantz of the LAFD reported three deaths at the scene and noted paramedics handled six or seven patients, some in serious condition.[2] The building remained structurally stable, with no fire reported. Officials from the Department of Building and Safety assessed potential damage.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass expressed condolences: “My heart is with the victims, their families, and all who were impacted by the deadly crash at the 99 Ranch Market in Westwood this afternoon. I want to thank our first responders who acted immediately to respond to this emergency and render critical aid.”[1] Police continued gathering evidence into the evening, exploring possible medical factors.
