Las Vegas Motor Speedway – Christopher Bell captured the top starting spot for Sunday’s Pennzoil 400 presented by Jiffy Lube with a commanding qualifying lap.[1][2]

Blistering Lap Secures Top Honor

Bell clocked a fast lap of 28.853 seconds at 187.156 mph in his No. 20 Interstate Batteries Toyota during Saturday’s qualifying session.[1][2] That effort marked his first pole of the 2026 season and his 15th in NASCAR Cup Series competition.[1]

He edged out Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Denny Hamlin by 0.150 seconds, with Hamlin posting 186.188 mph in the No. 11.[1] Bell praised his team’s preparation after the run. “It was pretty simple, really,” he said. “My team got their Ps and Qs right. We had a lot of grip, and I held my foot down, and we won the pole.”[1]

The performance also highlighted Bell’s affinity for the 1.5-mile oval, where commitment in the turns proved decisive.

Joe Gibbs Racing Dominates Front Row

Joe Gibbs Racing locked down the first three positions, a testament to the organization’s strength on intermediate tracks.[1] Ty Gibbs qualified third at 185.803 mph in the No. 54, while Bubba Wallace rounded out the top four for Toyota at 185.771 mph in the No. 23.[2]

Toyota’s sweep of the top four marked the seventh such occurrence in Cup Series history and continued their recent qualifying prowess at LVMS.[1] Here is the top 10 starting lineup:

  • 1. Christopher Bell, No. 20 Toyota (187.156 mph)[1]
  • 2. Denny Hamlin, No. 11 Toyota (186.188 mph)
  • 3. Ty Gibbs, No. 54 Toyota (185.803 mph)
  • 4. Bubba Wallace, No. 23 Toyota (185.771 mph)
  • 5. Kyle Larson, No. 5 Chevrolet (185.548 mph)
  • 6. Ryan Blaney, No. 12 Ford (185.185 mph)
  • 7. Tyler Reddick, No. 45 Toyota
  • 8. Ryan Preece, No. 60 Chevrolet
  • 9. William Byron, No. 24 Chevrolet
  • 10. Chris Buescher, No. 17 Ford

Defending race winner Josh Berry started 32nd in the No. 21.[3]

Fourth Pole at a Familiar Track

This pole represented Bell’s fourth at Las Vegas Motor Speedway across 13 Cup starts.[2][1] Previous efforts came in 2022 – his first career Cup pole – along with 2023 and another recent outing.

Despite the qualifying success, Bell has yet to claim a Cup victory here. He holds four top-five finishes and five top-10s at the venue. Crew chief Adam Stevens selected pit stall No. 1, optimizing strategy for the race.[1]

Bell noted the challenges of the track’s bumps and smooth sections. “It’s a compromise… my team nailed it,” he explained.[1]

Outlook for Sunday’s Showdown

The Pennzoil 400 takes the green flag Sunday at 4 p.m. ET, broadcast on FS1, HBO Max, PRN Radio, and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.[1] With 36 cars in the field, competition intensifies on the high-banked oval.[3]

Bell’s front-row start positions him well amid JGR’s momentum, but turning the pole into a win remains the ultimate goal.

Key Takeaways

  • Bell’s 187.156 mph lap delivers his 15th career Cup pole and fourth at LVMS.
  • Joe Gibbs Racing claims top three spots, Toyota sweeps top four.
