The 11 Most Disliked Movie Characters of All Time, According to Fans

The 11 Most Disliked Movie Characters of All Time, According to Fans
SHARE

Some movie characters are designed to be villains. Others just sort of happen to be despised, almost by accident. Then there’s a third category, possibly the most interesting one: characters who inspire such a visceral, gut-level reaction that fans are still talking about them decades later. Not because they were poorly written, necessarily, but because something about them struck a nerve too real to ignore.

Contents
1. Dolores Umbridge – Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2005)2. Jar Jar Binks – Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999)3. Biff Tannen – Back to the Future (1985)4. Cal Hockley – Titanic (1997)5. Briony Tallis – Atonement (2007)6. Marla Grayson – I Care a Lot (2020)7. Regina George – Mean Girls (2004)8. Hans Landa – Inglourious Basterds (2009)9. Bella Swan – Twilight (2008)10. Paris – Troy (2004)11. Sid Phillips – Toy Story (1995)

While it can be interesting to find a villain with sympathetic motivations, the most hated characters often generate just as much discussion, especially those that weren’t written to be disliked by viewers. These characters can be hated for any number of reasons, from a specific action through to their personality, but with the most disliked characters of all time, it’s often very clear why they’re despised. What follows is a look at eleven of the most consistently, passionately disliked characters in cinema history, drawn from fan polls, audience reactions, and years of online discourse.

1. Dolores Umbridge – Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2005)

Umbridge has been described as one of the most hated fictional characters. Charlotte Ahlin of Bustle said that Umbridge’s nastiness “got under every reader’s skin.” The entertainment website IGN called her a hideous and nasty character who applies despicable punishments. As one of the most despised characters in the Harry Potter series, Dolores Umbridge’s sugary-sweet demeanor hides a cruel and manipulative nature. While her actions infuriate fans, there’s no denying that she adds an extra layer of tension and conflict to the story.

The key reason why fans hate Umbridge even more than Voldemort is because we’ve met her in real life. We know people like her. As bad as Voldemort is, he’s cartoonishly bad. His brand of evil is theatrical and over the top, nearly Joker levels of evil. Umbridge is disturbingly real with her evil. She is depicted as an evil, cruel, authoritarian, power-hungry, bigoted, and despicable woman who represented the worst of political power, under a saccharine image filled with kittens, fluff, and girlishness. She is sadistic and overwhelmingly corrupt, to the point of finding joy in torturing students.

2. Jar Jar Binks – Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999)

Arguably the most hated and loathed Star Wars character ever, Jar Jar Binks was initially created for comic relief but was instead met with overwhelming disdain by fans. The character has been widely rejected and ridiculed, with many people believing he was introduced solely to appeal to children. Many critics felt he was a racial caricature, and his childlike voice and grating personality did not resonate one bit with fans of the franchise.

Jar Jar Binks was the first character in a live-action film to be created through motion-capture technology, with actor Ahmed Best being the first to play that type of role. Best recalled the negative feedback about the character at the time and how he was a target for harassment from the fanbase, which resulted in him stepping back from acting for some time after the project. Jar Jar Binks never received any kind of closure in the prequel trilogy, a byproduct of the character’s role being significantly diminished after intense fan backlash.

3. Biff Tannen – Back to the Future (1985)

Marty McFly is one of the most endearing sci-fi protagonists of all time, and his nature seems significantly more lovable when compared with the antagonist, Biff Tannen. Biff isn’t very smart and he has a particular distaste for manure, but his behavior is downright detestable. In 1955, he plays a horrible bully who takes advantage of Lorraine; in two separate 1985 timelines, he is a vicious tyrant who enjoys flaunting his power and authority; and in 1885, his ancestor proves that the entire Tannen bloodline is problematic.

What makes Biff so enduringly disliked is how thoroughly Thomas F. Wilson committed to making him irredeemable across three separate films. There’s no complexity, no redemptive arc, just bullying with a self-satisfied grin. A character may be disliked for many reasons, but most often because their behavior and actions are impossible to relate to. Considering that love and hate are two sides of the same coin, hated characters are frequently as iconic as their lovable counterparts.

4. Cal Hockley – Titanic (1997)

Cal Hockley was the snobby and arrogant fiancé of Rose in 1997’s Titanic, and he was extremely controlling and manipulative toward her. As Rose’s feelings and love for Jack grow in the film, Cal becomes increasingly jealous and cruel toward both of them. His vile and true colors begin to truly show when the ship begins to sink; he frames Jack for theft of the Heart of the Ocean necklace and also tries to shoot at the pair in a jealous rage. Cal also stoops pathetically low by at first trying to bribe a spot on a lifeboat, and then later by grabbing an abandoned child and claiming them as his own for safety.

Billy Zane played the role with a kind of confident, cartoonish cruelty that made him easy to despise. What makes Cal particularly memorable is how his awfulness escalates so naturally throughout the film’s runtime. By the time he grabs a terrified orphan child to secure his place on a lifeboat, audiences had already lost any tolerance they might have had for him.

5. Briony Tallis – Atonement (2007)

5. Briony Tallis – Atonement (2007) (Image Credits: Pexels)

In Atonement, it is not hard to imagine why the character of Briony Tallis is one of the most hated movie characters, given her harmful impact on the rest of the characters. Briony is the main destructive force in ruining many people’s lives in the period piece, and by the ending of Atonement her lies have literally resulted in the deaths of several family members. Despite her young age in the film and her quest for atonement, the 13-year-old upper-crust teenager destroyed everyone around her thanks to her selfish desires. However, Briony is also a fascinating character, as the act that makes her so hated is done with a child-like misunderstanding of the consequences.

Audiences across the world have united to discredit Jenny, played admirably by Robin Wright, as one of the worst movie characters in history. Repeatedly using our hero Forrest Gump for her own means while seemingly giving little thought to his wellbeing has made her enemy number one in many film circles. Yet Briony from Atonement sits in a separate, arguably even harder-to-forgive category. She ruins lives not through cruelty or greed, but through a combination of vanity and narrow-mindedness, which somehow feels worse.

6. Marla Grayson – I Care a Lot (2020)

6. Marla Grayson – I Care a Lot (2020) (GabboT, Flickr, CC BY-SA 2.0)

A Netflix original movie, 2021’s I Care A Lot was a highly polarizing film, with many finding the main character too loathsome to enjoy the movie. Many viewers agreed just how unlikable the character of Marla Grayson is, and this is for good reason. Rosamund Pike stars as Marla, a woman who makes money while stealing from elderly people through a legal court-appointed guardian role. Despite the obviousness of her evil deeds, Marla presents herself as if she is doing nothing wrong. Such characters make the audience hate them even more, as it is frustrating seeing someone do something reprehensible while not acknowledging how evil they are.

It is tricky for a movie to pull off a protagonist that the audience is meant to hate, but I Care A Lot and Rosamund Pike manage it. Rosamund Pike’s performance is unnervingly effective precisely because Marla never blinks. She operates her exploitation with the calm confidence of someone who has convinced themselves they’re doing society a favor. It’s that self-righteousness, more than the crimes themselves, that makes her so difficult to stomach.

7. Regina George – Mean Girls (2004)

Regina George is without a doubt one of the biggest movie characters you just can’t help but love to hate. She is a villain straight out of your teenage nightmares, with a desire to rule the school and stay on top of the social pyramid. Regina is vain and cruel, one minute complimenting you and the next saying something rude and catty. She’s the ultimate “It Girl” with looks and money, but she makes her fellow classmates’ lives a living hell. Mean Girls is a teen cult classic, and Regina is a character that is both equally loved and loathed.

What separates Regina from most screen bullies is how recognizable she is. Rachel McAdams played her with such precise, confident venom that the character became cultural shorthand for a specific kind of social cruelty. Decades on from the film’s release, Regina George is still cited in fan discussions and academic pieces about female antagonists, a testament to just how deeply she embedded herself in popular consciousness.

8. Hans Landa – Inglourious Basterds (2009)

8. Hans Landa – Inglourious Basterds (2009) (Zadi Diaz, Flickr, CC BY-SA 2.0)

Nazis generally make for hateable movie characters, but Christoph Waltz’s Hans Landa is spectacularly obnoxious even by Nazi standards. His gleeful narcissism is galling, especially given that he pridefully refers to himself as the “Jew Hunter.” Unlike Amon Goeth, who at least has the decency to stick to his guns, Hans Landa sees nothing wrong with shifting allegiances to save his hide. Aldo doesn’t take too kindly to his defection because he realizes that Landa’s change of heart is nothing more than a shameless survival ploy.

Christoph Waltz won an Academy Award for the performance, and rightly so. Waltz delivers Landa with an almost theatrical charm that makes him even more repugnant. The character is intelligent, self-aware, and utterly devoid of any genuine moral conviction. He’s someone who does monstrous things not out of ideology, but out of personal ambition, which audiences have consistently found more disturbing than straightforward fanaticism.

9. Bella Swan – Twilight (2008)

Kristen Stewart brought the mopey teen Bella Swan irritatingly to life on the big screen for each and every Twilight movie. What’s funny is that the character is so annoying because she has nothing to be mopey about. She’s beautiful, adored by the hottest guy in school, who also happens to be a vampire. Audiences found her perpetual gloom hard to relate to given her circumstances. The list of most hated characters covers toxic romance leads such as Christian Grey and Bella Swan.

In the Twilight series, Bella Swan’s indecisiveness and tendency to rely on others can frustrate viewers. However, her relatable struggles with identity and love make her a compelling protagonist for fans who are drawn to her emotional journey. The fan divide on Bella is real. Her defenders argue the character is unfairly held to a standard her male counterparts rarely face. Her detractors simply found five films of passive indecision to be exhausting. Both camps made a lot of noise online, which is why she belongs on this list regardless.

10. Paris – Troy (2004)

Troy actively points out why Paris is not a likable character and then attempts to redeem him in the end after it is far too late. Paris ignites a war by stealing the wife of an ally lord. When Paris is given the opportunity to take responsibility for his mistakes, he decides to save himself. In the end, Paris’ actions lead to the death of his entire family, the destruction of Troy, and the deaths of countless people.

Orlando Bloom played Paris as a character caught between bravado and cowardice, which is a difficult balance to pull off, and it didn’t quite land. While Achilles is meant to be something of an antihero who the audience cheers for despite his questionable behavior, Paris is a lot harder to cheer for. When Paris is given the opportunity to take responsibility for his mistakes, he decides to save himself. Troy actively points out why Paris is not a likable character and then attempts to redeem him in the end after it is far too late. Audiences simply never forgave him for it.

11. Sid Phillips – Toy Story (1995)

All the toys are terrified of Sid Phillips and for good reason. While Andy loves his toys and takes good care of them, Sid can be found performing gruesome experiments on them. He callously executes a number of innocent toys using explosives, fire, and other equally cruel methods. For a children’s film, Sid is genuinely unsettling. He’s not a cartoon supervillain with a grand plan; he’s just a kid with no empathy and unrestricted access to fireworks.

What makes Sid memorable across generations is how plausible he feels. There are many characters who are absolutely despised but also aren’t antagonists. Their actions make people hate them sometimes more than the actual villains. Sid occupies that uncomfortable middle space, too young to be truly evil but old enough to know exactly what he’s doing to the toys he destroys. The scene where the mutant toys finally turn on him remains one of Pixar’s most satisfying moments, and the relief audiences feel tells you everything about how much they disliked him.

Taken together, this list reveals something worth noting. The characters fans dislike most aren’t always the most dangerous or the most powerful. Often, it’s the smug, the petty, the cowardly, or the wilfully oblivious that leave the longest-lasting sour taste. Voldemort wants to rule the world, but Umbridge just enjoys making life miserable for people around her. One feels like fiction. The other feels like your most difficult coworker, with a wand.
