Lawrence admitted the same, though she joked that “I’ve never made something like Titanic – if I did I would watch it. Once I was really drunk, I put on American Hustle. I was like, ‘I wonder if I’m good at acting?’ I put it on, and I don’t remember what the answer is.” The exchange, later picked up by outlets like AOL and HuffPost, quickly became one of the more talked about celebrity confessions of the year, precisely because Titanic remains one of the highest grossing films ever made.
Denzel Washington
Denzel Washington’s stance is less about insecurity and more about simple fatigue with the medium itself. During a 2025 GQ interview alongside Spike Lee and A$AP Rocky, promoting the crime thriller Highest 2 Lowest, the star of “Malcolm X” kept his eyes down on his device and said, “I don’t watch movies, man. I really don’t.” He wasn’t just referring to his own filmography either, he meant movies in general.
Pressed further, Washington doubled down without hesitation. “I’m just being honest with you! I don’t watch movies!” he said. “I don’t go to the movies. I don’t watch movies. … I’m tired of movies.” The moment carried extra weight given his own words elsewhere, where Washington claimed, “I haven’t watched any film from my past from start to finish, not even ‘Malcolm X,'” and even though that feels like sacrilege to say, he continued, “After ‘Malcolm X’ I made some real clunkers.” Coming from an actor with credits stretching back over four decades, it’s a striking admission of detachment from a body of work most critics consider essential viewing.
Reese Witherspoon
Reese Witherspoon has been remarkably consistent about her aversion to watching her own performances, and her reasoning is refreshingly candid. She has said that acting is a creative moment that remains with her until she is done with the project, and she has even said that she has an “absolute amnesia about every movie” and if she watched them, the experience would sour for her. This holds true even for Walk the Line, the role that won her a Best Actress Oscar.
In an interview with the Daily Express, she put it even more bluntly. “I have absolute amnesia about every movie I have ever made. I won’t watch them because if I did I would spiral into a state of self-hate,” Witherspoon revealed. On Chelsea Lately, she expanded on the discomfort of seeing yourself pretend to be someone else on screen, asking rhetorically why anyone would want to watch themselves “being stupid and pretending to be somebody else,” calling the experience “torture.” It’s a rare case of an Oscar winning actress openly admitting her own filmography is essentially a blind spot.
Adam Driver
Adam Driver’s avoidance traces back to his roots in theater rather than film. He has explained that he loves to act but hates to see himself in film, mostly due to his theater background, since his craft was honed on the stage and he’s not used to or comfortable with seeing himself on screen. That discomfort has followed him even as his film career has grown to include franchises like Star Wars and prestige dramas alike.

I came from a theatre background, so it never really equated to me.” He has taken the habit further than most, noting in a separate interview that “I don’t watch anything I’ve been in, and I don’t read reviews or analysis of movies I’ve been in, or my plays.” Reports also suggest he has occasionally begun softening that stance, though it remains his default approach to his own body of work.
